I've tried lots, and my $40 Garmin never misses a beat (ha!). Had drop outs with others, and felt the optical was inaccurate.

the 500 is a handy bike computer. If you want to get serious about training, and affordable start is a heart rate monitor.

Monitor your heartrate during rides depending on what your goal is. Get on Strava and track your analytics.

Then if you're still serious, save up and get a power meter.

> Do you also wear a tinfoil hat under your helmet? You really think an insurance company is logging it, doing a search for certain individuals

You're obviously too young to have tried to purchase life insurance.

> Besides, Strava only guestimates

Well you've revealed that you don't actually have a resting HR of 34 because you don't wear a heart rate monitor.

> if you're that paranoid.

> In other news, I got a Forerunner 230 for Christmas and a $25 Amazon gift card. I've been thinking about getting a heart-rate monitor for a little bit but have a little more reason now. What's a good one for <$50 that you guys would suggest?

Garmin has their own heart rate monitor strap for use with their products. Right now it's about $40 on Amazon, down from $70 on Garmin's site. I got the 230 about two weeks ago with this strap and it's been working well for me so far.

I use this, or a model almost exactly like it (it's not showing up in my order history for some reason), and it works great with my Fenix 5s.

I use the Garmin Soft Strap with this gel to prevent spikes and get better signal (especially during the winter).

This Garmin chest strap HR monitor: http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Premium-Heart-Monitor-Strap/dp/B00BI9X1QM came with my 910XT and it is the best HR monitor I have had to date as far as comfort and accuracy. I recently came across the Scosche Rythym+ someone else mentioned and I would seriously consider that if I was shopping for a HR monitor today but like I said I am very happy with the Garmin I posted above and it is relatively cheap right now.

The strap is only uncomfortable when sitting down, well at least for me it is. Hardly notice it when running. Not sure exactly which strap I have but it was the one that came with my Fenix 2. It has the little running guy on the plastic bit. Having the heartrate metrics from the monitor really adds that extra dimension to my training. Especially when doing any kind of threshhold work. I would highly recommend looking into getting one. I know on Amazon you can get a garmin one for under $50. (https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Premium-Heart-Monitor-Strap/dp/B00BI9X1QM)

I have been using my Garmin Soft Strap HR Monitor since this summer for workouts and steady state. It's a good basis if you're going for target heart rate zone training and focus primarily on that which I believe is good to follow by when you train 10+ times a week for over 2 hours to see if you're overworking your body.

The only downside to this one is it has a list of compatible devices that are fairly expensive or using the Garmin Fit app to track sessions which requires a smart phone. All in all it made sense for me as I cycle frequently as cross training and fits for both worlds but I'd look over other options first. Good luck finding one!

Do you know if I can add something like this to my AW?

u/Derigiberble · 1 pointr/bicycling

This one.

The older model works fine but there are a good chunk of reviews about the new one failing quickly. Mine lasted two months before starting to give out.

u/baldgeek · 1 pointr/triathlon

Yup. I got Garmin on both Items.
The HR Monitor an d 910Xt was a Bundle an i added the Cadence roughly a year after i bought it. Works flawlessly.

I'm looking to finally pick up a heart rate monitor and I think I might have one. I've been looking at this one but I wasn't sure if there was a better, or more suggested, one for <$50 on Amazon. Any input is appreciated.

It depends on which Garmin chest strap. I assume it's the standard one here. You can buy the Garmin replacement, but I got the Polar one since it gets better reviews. Might need to trim the rubber a bit on the connections.

u/AquaticBatman · 1 pointr/Twitch

That's neat, I hadn't seen those small OTG dongles for phones before.

Do they still make the garmin cutest strap you use? I could only find this one which didnt have BT, only ANT+ (not that it matters for this application) but just curious.

And glad to hear the suunto movestick is good.

I'd suggest springing for the HRM-TRI, regular HRMs are ~$40 on Amazon, HRM-TRI is ~$120, $80 difference and you get running dynamics and heart rate in the water.

As for the colors, man, it even seems inappropriate in casual attire, but I'll be ordering this Flat black strap on Amazon to try to subdue the watch, I'll try to upload/dm you pictures if/when I get it to give you a better idea of what it might look like.

I got mine yesterday, turns out it was $120 off, but if you don't want to drop $450, try the used ones on Amazon, then send it to garmin to have it refurbished for $110. The cheapest this moment Link is $280 with shipping, and it looks proper, but even if you get it refurbished, it'll still only run out to $390, saves you half as much as an HRM-TRI costs.

I use this heart rate monitor with a Garmin Edge 500 and powertap hub.

You should be able to sync up the heart rate monitor with a smart phone though if you have that. These things aren't necessary, they just maximize training efficiency. At the very least, check out Tabata intervals and do those on the bike when you're riding those 10 miles twice a week.

Your trainer is supported by zwift, it'll estimate power using zPower which is an estimation, but it's good enough as a point of reference. So you can train against it.

Really all you need is an ANT+ Speed Sensor and an ANT+ stick. You can get a Garmin Speed/Cadence sensor that'll work just fine with zwift (I use an older model).

As you have more money, you can grab a heartrate sensor, also ANT+ which would work on zwift..

Then when you're ready to ride outside, you can buy a Garmin Edge. I have a 520, but a 500 would do (the one I linked is an example, expect to pay under $150 for one refurbished or used in great condition).. All the sensors you just bought are compatible with the Edge series (or any other GPS that uses ANT+, which is pretty much all of them)

I went the cheap route for virtual training and used my existing gear ([CatEye ISC-11 Speed/Cadence Sensor] (https://www.amazon.com/ISC-11-Cadence-CatEye-Integrated-Sensor/dp/B00B2PT2L0) and [Garmin Premium HRM] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BI9X1QM/?ie=UTF8&qid=1483675451&sr=8-2&pi=SL75_QL70&keywords=Garmin+hrm)), so all I had to do was pick up a cheap ANT+ dongle and a USB extension cord (more accurate readings that way) and I was Zwift-ready. Power readings are obviously less reliable than what you'd get with a proper power meter, but you'll still get a sense of your general performance and, more importantly, of your improvement over time. Saving a few hundred bucks is always nice, too.
