If you're looking at locally sourced, try to stick with cotton or multi-filament polypropylene (MFP). You may hear MFP called "derby rope." MFP is NOT the same as plain polypropylene, which is stiff and tends to have short fibers sticking out. Avoid plain polypropylene like the plague. Nylon can also work.

You want a rope that's a single material all the way through, nothing with a different core (clothesline is bad). Twisted or solid braid are both good. You generally want a rope in the 1/4"-5/16" range (6mm-8mm). Thinner than that it's less comfortable, thicker and it's too bulky especially in knots.

How much total length you need will vary depending on what you're doing and in what style, but generally you'll want to cut it down to 25ft-30ft pieces. Shorter can work for certain things, longer is usually a pain to work with.

Speaking of cutting, please have something on hand to cut the ropes with in case you need to get out quickly. Paramedic's shears should be available at any pharmacy, or something like this can be found at most outdoors stores. Basically, something to cut rope that makes it hard to cut the person inside it.

Reading up on it a lot is a good way to do it. Pay attention to the parts that talk about nerve damage. Going to classes is good. And perhaps, just thinking about the failure modes as you are tying. Such as, if I rig her like this and she fell over or I tripped and fell on her, what would happen to her arms?

Recommendations that the Top always have a cutting tool within reach when you are around rope. Scissors are a common safety tool, but some dungeons require something like a gerber easy zip My practice is to carry one whenever I am around people who are rigging. I keep it on my belt in the middle of my back so I can reach it with either hand. I never know if one of my hands may be occupied supporting the bottom if the rigging fails. And I never know when there could be an accident and the rigger may have accidentally left his tool in a bag across the room.

I have never had it happen to me, but I have heard about an experienced rigger who had a suspension fail, and had to use both hands to keep his bottom from choking. The people standing around him did not have safety tools and had to scramble to locate one.

Yeah. what you have is WAY better.... between the neon floggers and the gloves you'll see this: http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-45924-E-Z-Zip-Sheath/dp/B000W0EW9I

which is my makeshift emergency cutter til I can afford a good one. Basically any hook-blade will do a MUCH better job than shears. Shears have their downfalls too

I really don't want to be a downer but it's really scary how quickly things can go wrong even when you take all possible precautions and know exactly what you're doing. Let's be honest with ourselves here. The statement that you've "avoiding neck-ties as much as possible" isn't true. That would mean not doing them at all. You're the one tying the knots. There is nothing forcing your hand. That's an irresponsible attempt to dodge culpability in your own thoughts and convince yourself that you're doing everything possible to make this safe.

Strangulation injuries are the most common cause of BDSM trauma and deaths by a wide margin. It doesn't matter if you only do it once in a while. Tragic mistakes aren't cumulative effects. It only takes one slip that you might not even notice.

Get the shears or you can opt for a strap cutter/hook knife/gutting hook. I like the ones with replaceable blades so you now it will cut easily and quickly without the risk of further injury. Just make sure the gap is wide to easily accept the ties or rope (if you go that path)

It's less than a movie ticket and a small price to pay for increased safety. You've been meaning to get them for a few months and unless you do it soon you'll keep putting it off. Nothing bad has happened to prove that they are necessary but by then it's far too late. I don't do knotted neck ties unless I have a cutter of some kind on my person. It's not worth the risk. Make sure that you're also practicing your knots and know which ones slip in what way. Ties are slick and more likely to slip unexpectedly that natural rope.

Don't you want your bottom to know that you're actually taking every possible step to ensure her safety? Safety (especially in regards to rope/ties) should not be treated with an 'I'll get around to it eventually' attitude.

Edit: I just want to apologize if I sound like I'm being a jerk about this. Very much not my intention. I do this for a living and teach BDSM techniques, so it's something I'm a bit passionate about.
