I think he or she means something like these. I've never heard of anyone getting carpal tunnel from doing push ups the normal way.

For some of the exercises, I've been using pushup bars like this.

Maybe that would help? They do allow you to keep your wrists straight.

Pushup handles are also really cool. They can be used for other movements, are small, and inexpensive.

Get a pair of push-up bars. I don't have half the struggles you might have with your wrists, but years and years of computer work have weakened the hell out of my wrists and I THINK I have carpal tunnel syndrome, so these have been helping a lot with pressure on my wrist.

I don't have these exact ones, but this style works and they work great when you can't find hex dumbbells to grip onto. http://www.amazon.com/GoFit-GF-PUB-Push-Up-Bars/dp/B0007W2FLS

You could look into getting some push up bars. It will allow you to keep your wrists straight while doing push ups. That should alleviate the wrist pain. They will also allow a greater range of motion. They don't look like they'd be terribly difficult to pack and travel with.

I have weak wrists and these really help me out! GoFit Push-Up Bars with Foam Padded Grips, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007W2FLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_KBmPybEDNW13G

Have you tried using Push-Up Bars at all? I was having similar problems with my wrists during push-ups and these helped quite a bit. Took a lot of the strain off, basically you can do "knuckle" push-ups without the knuckle part.

I know it's not what you've got listed as something you really want, but:

These are really good. Coach Sommer, author of the book which I also read and love, really recommends doing a lot of l-sit work. If you can get to the point where you can hold an l-sit for even a couple seconds, those pushup bars are your best friend. Seriously, wake up and hold an l-sit on those suckers for a few reps, and your abs will be tough as nails quite quickly.

As far as rings go, don't go cheap. If you want to make your own, make sure you find a guide that will build rings to support your weight. I bought:
http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Rings-2-0-Gymnastic-Crossfit/dp/B0030CEHYU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320160318&sr=8-1

They have treated me extremely well, and I have made a lot of progress on these rings, from barely holding myself up to doing a muscle up to planche to handstand on them. They are still good as new. They are like 37 bucks and are available with prime, so it's a pretty good deal. If you're willing to spend some more money you could actually get a nice pair of wooden rings. They are pretty nice and work well with chalk.

Also, look into push-ups bars like these. They take the pressure off your wrist and move it into your forearms where it belongs.
