Intugame VR has a iOS build, requires a minimum of iOS 7.0. Might be worth a try.

If you are running VR on your phone you don't need a lot of processing power generally. For the phone it's basically acting as a display, streaming video. Any cheap phone now a days should be able to handle video streams without issue.

For the computer side the streaming software handles the stereoscopic effect. What it basically does is uses a smaller windowed version of the game application. Then it just copies the video to the other eye. More or less mirroring it.

This means you are actually running the game at even lower resolution that at fullscreen.

Honestly my first attempt at a VR headset used a Joygeek VR headset. VR For $20 bucks when used with my 2013 Moto X. (I ordered the LG G3 a week or two later on sale to see how the jump to 2560x1440 resolution changed the experience)

google daydream is exactly what your looking for, so long as you have a phone that is supported by that platform.
If not I would recommend this headset, I purchased one last year and it has fit my head nicely.
