Looks like 10 rounders are available.

I also suggest getting two nano vaults

Or you could use two lockable tool boxes or similar. The law just says locked, not that it has to be a great lock or a steel case. So you may have something that fits the bill. Even two separate gym bags with TSA style Locks in the zippers. Most important is that gun and ammo/magazines are separate cases. Not different compartments if the same case.

Also, MD considers the gun and ammo in the same case to be a loaded gun even if magazine not. in gun or ammo not in mag.

NJ bans possession of hollow point so leave them home.

Make sure your vehicle gives them no reason to stop you. Check all lights including license plate light. Remove license plate frame if it covers ANY of the wording or stickers. Verify brake lights etc.

I do this trip a couple of times a year. Plan my route to spend as little time in NY as possible and barely cross the tip of NJ. From TN you can avoid MD completely so do that.

I don't often leave my weapon in my truck but I have a Nanovault 300 in case I need to. If you're just using it just for storage and don't need to get into it quickly then this might work for you. Mine came with a cable that you can put through the seat frame. I'm not sure if its just mine but the knob is a bit tough to turn.

Get a car safe and keep it in your vehicle. Carry a good pocket knife or even pepper spray if you can if you can't carry a weapon at your work.

I'm going to say a small lockable gun case. I personally just received a NanoVault gun case and think it's worth picking up. No, it's not supposed to be a true thief-proof gun safe, IMO. But if you are going somewhere that you legally cannot carry and wish to leave your gun in your car, this little fella provides at least some measure of theft. Also, if you plan on transporting it via airline in your checked luggage then this takes up very little space and can be secured to the suitcase itself. Thirdly, if you're traveling through other states via car you may need to secure it in a locked container in the trunk, and this also fits that bill nicely. It's not particularly great at anything other than being small, but I think it does fill a special niche in gun safety and for $30 is worth having.

The NRA-ILA page on gun laws should be helpful, particularly their Guide to the Interstate Transportation of Firearms.

Generally speaking, you're advised to keep it in a locked case (like this one). If you want it more accessible, you could get a series of multi-state concealed carry permits (basically, you can be a non-resident and get a permit from certain states, such as Utah, Florida, and Arizona, that other states honor, thus allowing you to carry concealed in those states as well). Here's some more information; just look for classes that qualify if you want to pursue that option.

You should probably have some kind of pepper spray/bear spray so you have a less than lethal option anyway, but depending on your route (i.e. if you'll be going through rural areas where wildlife could be an issue) a firearm might be worth bringing.

Do you ever shoot for sport? You could shoot at local ranges or IDPA tournaments (beginners welcome) on your journey. The gun doesn't have to be just for personal protection.

You probably don't need it, but ultimately it's a personal choice. I do very much recommend a good knife though, because it's extremely useful in a wide variety of situations.

Is the model with the combination lock any more secure?

The trunk is huge! The spare is mounted on the rear door so there is tons of space inside.

I don't over think it much. I just use a lock box in the trunk, with a steel cable that attaches to the car. I make sure that the box is hidden under things (often my spare tire). Something like this.

Yes, someone can still figure out a way to steal my gun, but not without some effort. In fact, it is probably easier to steal the whole car than trying to break open the lock box in a public parking lot. These guys don't spend hours rummaging through your car in broad daylight. They are in and out.

They especially like targeting cars that look like they have valuables in them, so don't leave your purse on the driver's seat (like a friend did and got robbed). Don't leave Christmas gifts in plain view in the back seat (like the same friend did, and got robbed again). Also don't put a bunch of NRA, Glock, S&W bumper stickers on your car (it is like a sign that says "there might be a gun in here").

If I'm going somewhere I can't legally carry [90% of the time] I leave my gun at home. If I'm gone for a few days and want to take my gun, I bring small GunVault and stash it under one of the seats.

u/bladepsycho · 0 pointsr/CCW

Gunvault Nanovaults are complete junk. The lock is made of plastic. It is literally easier to pry them open than it is to open them "properly".

Read the 1 star reviews on Amazon. They're 100% true, as the exact same thing happened to mine

Do yourself a favor and get a real lockbox as soon as you can.

I have this.

I will by no means claim it to be the best. Obviously a dedicated thief could still steal it, but it will keep the honest people honest. Plus, it was a cheap solution for a poor college student.
