Don't forget about the other little details either. You may have bills, food, entertainment, and emergencies all budgeted out, but you're also going to need toilet paper, dish soap, spare lightbulbs, and a whole host of other things that you might not be used to regularly buying for yourself.
Buy these for roach infestations, which may occur even if you try to keep the place clean. Assuming you have an air conditioner and use it, these have filters that need to be changed every couple months.
Buy food that keeps well and is easy to prepare. Even if you like to cook or can afford lots of takeout, there will be nights when all you want is to grab something out of the fridge and put it in your mouth. Also, clean out the fridge at least every month or so.
Introduce yourself to your neighbors if you happen to see them. It's good to start off friendly, since you will probably end up needing to politely ask one of them to keep quiet at some point. It's also nice to have a nearby friend when you inevitably forget to take my advice about the plunger.

Suggestion - roach tablets - Sprays smell, powder spreads and better than plain borax because it has an attractant. I know for a fact this one works well on Atlanta roaches. Plus its very neat - just put them on the floor where guests can't see them and the roaches will find the tablets.

You can get them just about anywhere. Put them throughout the house behind furniture, in cabinets. And in other places you'd expect roaches. They are irresistible to roaches and kill them quickly. Only downside is when you look at them you can see where the roaches have been munching on them and it's kinda disconcerting hahaha.
I didn't have a roach 'problem' but every month or two I would see on in the bathroom. I hate the fuckers so
I bought these through them in every crevice of the apartment, under the fridge, stove, all over. I knew the bugs were coming from the basement of the building so I went down there and chucked them in every direction. Haven't seen a bug since.

I've had good luck with Bait, just throw the little pills in cracks and holes. Bugs eat dead bugs and become bait themselves.

Also, I Ziploc ALL my food. Lots of containers just aren't bug proof, put any and all food inside ziploc bags.

But prices one some things are ludicrous. I had a silverfish problem at my old apartment and there are these roach pellets that supposedly work really well in killing them. Take a look
