BELOVED - Toni Morrison's great American ghost story about slavery is a one-two punch of horror. Not sure why it's not mentioned more often on lists like these.
THE GREEN MAN - Kingsley Amis filters the traditional ghost story through his own sensibilities and the result is a dark, occasionally funny, kind of sad take on the cozy British M.R. James-style ghost story.
THOSE ACROSS THE RIVER - more of a B-list potboiler, but an exceptionally well done one. The writing is quite good, and it's head-and-shoulders above a lot of what's coming out. The ending manages not to go all Hollywood, which is rare.
HAWKSMOOR - two timelines, one in 17th Century London and one in mid-80's London, a bunch of churches, occult architecture, and serial murder. It's dense, it's complicated, but it's a real headtrip.
I was going to post this, it is ai interesting read. Amazon link. I also hear good stuff about Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem. .
