They are not the first choice for migraines. Your doc will probably want to try other things first. I do fine with percocet or Tylenol 3 but mine are fairly infrequent and not super bad. If you have nausea with your headache you probably don't want any opiate since nausea can be a side effect. I can tolerate codeine and hydrocodone but morphine and its ilk make me hurl.
A good book that lists all the drug choices is "Headache Help". It goes over the various types of headaches plus all the various drugs that can be used to treat them. Plus it has charts of all the medications in the back.
What can happen is that your goto drug stops working for you so you have to try something else.
