Pick up the 1TB 7200rpm HGST drive for $55. Twice the space, a little faster then stock drive, runs very quiet and cool. Great upgrade, loved mind in my PS4 and pro before I went SSD

Buy a separate hard drive and a USB-C enclosure. Pre-manufactured external drives have the ports soldered to the disk, so if the ports fail, you can't remove the hard drive and re-use it. It's always better to just put together your own external hard drive because of this.

Here's another reason for "making" your own external drives: Let's say you had an old, non-USB-C hard drive enclosure. You could easily just put the drive in a new USB-C enclosure instead of having to buy an entirely new external drive.

u/Kamykazi · 5 pointsr/PS4

I was going to get the one that you mentioned but I ended up getting this: http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-Internal-0J22423/dp/B00B4QESVQ

I use this combo, very happy with it. I like the fact that it doesn't require an external power source therefore turns off when the xbox turns off and runs at 7200 RPM.

That's not actually an SSD, it's a SSD/HDD hybrid. These types of drives have negligible benefits for load time over a 7200rpm HDD and provide no benefit in terms in actual game performance.

You'd be better off purchasing a cheaper 1TB 7200rpm HDD like this one.

If you aren't bother about saving an extra second or two on load time you could pick up a 5400 rpm drive even cheaper (this is the speed of the default PS4 HDD).

Nice work op! I found [this HDD] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B4QESVQ/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_JJ7Nwb6J57Y78) on Amazon for my laptop. Maybe take a look at it and see if you can find better ones in 3.5in. Best of luck!

please note that almost everyone that has this drive experiences a frequent and annoying "beeping" coming from the harddrive. no one knows why and their is no fix. just the price u pay for having the only 9.5mm 2.5" 2TB hdd on the market, made by a company that anyone with any tech experience whatsoever has sworn a solemn oath to avoid for all eternity

This is the 32Mb cache version with 1TB of storage. The 64Mb version will be a tad faster for $6 more US dollars because of how the drive is being used. Since you games are constantly accessing the drive, more cache will help a bit in speed but it's not necessary. I've seen this on amazon as low as $56 too so just keep a look out if it's a bit out of your price range. Plus the PS4 wouldn't be able to maximize an SSD's power since it's running on SATA II, which has a lower bandwidth limit than modern SATA III SSD'S

u/sunjay140 · 2 pointsr/PS4

Yes, it's an improvement though not a huge one. I've never tried that drive. I have this drive, it's the same manufacturer as the stock hard drive but this model is 1tb (a bit too small) and 7200rpm. It's dead silent for me though one review mentioned clicking. Maybe they're isolated cases?

u/quanzi1507 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you don't mind the weight:

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i7559-763BLK-Full-HD-GeForce/dp/B015PYYDMQ

Pros:

  • Quad-core CPU (albeit i5) compared to dual-core

  • Double the battery capacity (6-cell compared to 3-cell)

  • FHD anti-glare screen (technically should draw less power than the 4k screen of the Asus, 4K is also a bit overkill for a 15.6'' screen)

  • The 256GB SSD is a M.2 one which leaves the 2.5'' HDD slot empty, so you can always install a HDD later to expand storage (this comes to mind)

  • Better GPU (the 960M is about 17% faster than the 950M)

  • More VRAM (4GB DDR5 compared to 2GB DDR5)

    Cons:

  • Less RAM (8GB vs. 16GB)

  • Way more heavy (8.7lbs vs. 4.4lbs) - I blame the battery
u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/PS4

You can install any 2.5" HDD or SSD with a maximum height of 12.5mm.

Examples:

u/rauelius · 2 pointsr/PS3

I use the 500GB version of this.

https://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-Internal-0J22423/dp/B00B4QESVQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467986038&sr=8-2&keywords=hitachi+7200+rpm+laptop

Installing an SSD in the PS3 won't make as big of a difference as you think. The SATA interface in the PS3 is archaic, and a nice fast Spindle HDD's performance would be imperceptible from that of an SSD, while providing you with a massive amount of storage.

u/Phuc_Mee · 2 pointsr/macbookpro

Buy a 2.5" bare internal drive, an external enclosure, put the drive in the enclosure and enjoy. This is a much better way to go because often when your typical passport type drives fail it's the sata bridge card that fails not the drive itself. You can then remove the drive and place it into a new enclosure or use a dock. Amazon links to the ones I use:

Without a hard drive I think you could still get quite a bit. At least around $650 - $700 from the right buyer. Putting a new 1TB HDD in there for about $60 might be worth it. I use eBay every day and have sold 30+ apple computers there - good photos help reduce potential returns or buyers remorse. Checking the buyer's feedback for their buying experience is a good way to avoid potential issues as well. Before selling I wipe the computer down with a high percentage alcohol wipe and I also include a charger. Let me know if you have any questions! GLWS

u/starchaserro · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I think you can give this one a try: hitachi

u/VerticalEvent · 1 pointr/PS4

I don't agree. The only 1TB 7200rpm I can find from New Egg is this one, and it's $270, more then twice the price of the 1TB SSHD. [EDIT: Found this one for $86 at Amazon]Maybe it's worth it if you constantly switching games, but I think that's it's a small sample of players who do that (mostly, players who are constantly playing different games, and people with PS4's constantly being used by more then one player).

As well, it depends on the size of the SSD portion - you are likely to need around 50GB of SSD for a single game. If the SSD portion was around 100GB, then you could keep two PS4 games in the SSD portion, for quick loading of two games at a time (not including other file usage and PS4 bootup files).

u/inglorioustoast · 1 pointr/applehelp

What do you exactly mean by speeding up? Overall performance, or something else?

For performance, get a solid state drive (SSD). It will reduce boot time to mere seconds, and make your applications run smooth / open quickly.

I upgraded my 17 inch late 2010 MacBook Pro with a Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD and I replaced my superdrive with a HDD caddy and a 1TB 2.5" drive. Boots faster than the macbook air we have, and has a crapton of space. Hope this helps

u/liquidsnakex · 1 pointr/playstation

Probably not, Seagate is one of the least reliable manufacturers out there and the amazon link says everything about the drive but it's model number. Seems a little dodgy as you have no way of researching the model of drive you're getting.

Either way, I'd recommend this one for the higher 7200RPM rotation rate, it will mean slightly faster load times than that 5400RPM drive. HGST is the most reliable HDD manufacturer and that model is specifically marketed as PS4 compatible, so you know it it'll work and last a long time.

I've used a 1TB drive since launch, have 30+ full games and downloaded nearly every PS+ game since, and only out of space now 'cause I have 250GB in saved gameplay videos. 1TB is fine as long as you do some very minimal space management every few years.

Also, the PS4 Pro uses a SATA-III interface, so higher-performance drives and SSDs can take advantage of it. Just something to remember if you plan to get a Pro.

u/MikeCox-Hurz · 1 pointr/xboxone

This is more than likely the hard drive starting to fail. I would look into getting a replacement, there are a lot of guides on YouTube on how to swap it. Something like this would increase your overall dashboard and loading speed.

My best suggestion is probably the Dell Inspiron 7559 for $670. It's now on sale, and it has some fantastic specs for it's price range if you're looking for a budget gaming laptop. It comes with a quad core i5-6300HQ processor, 8gb of ram and a 256GB SSD. It has a GTX 960M graphics card, which is about the best you'll find for under $1000 and should be fine to play most games on the market, including Civ, Total War, Cities Skyline, Banished, and Tropico. It also has a full 1080p IPS display, a very long battery life (advertised up to 10 hours), and a backlit keyboard.

The Storage and RAM on the laptop are also pretty easy to upgrade if you desire to do so (1TB HDD drives can be found around $58 and 8gb Ram slots can be found around $38. It has another storage slot to add a HDD if you need more storage, and another slot to add a RAM card. Here is a video on how to upgrade it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXcxFPDRvRo

u/badgcoupe · 1 pointr/homelab

I thought of that as well, thanks for bringing it up, forgot to add that to my list of "woes".

After doing some research the consensus seems to be not worth the risk of drives failing. A few articles/posts also mentioned the more inexpensive drives may not be equipped with TLER for use in RAID. I think I should do a little more digging.

Also, this would be a "dual purpose" server if you will, so my security system will be writing upwards of 50GB of data to the drives every 4 hours. Not sure what that equates to when compared to enterprise level but just throwing it out there.

Maybe this is worth revisiting, I'm seeing 500GB-750GB laptop drives out there for as low as $49

EDIT
I wonder how these would work, they state they are tested for 24x7 operation:

Does it require the storage to be internal? It's pretty cheap to get like a laptop hdd in an external usb enclosure, I don't have Plex set up but that's what I'm doing with an old laptop hdd and this enclosure ($15):

Sabrent USB 3.0 to SSD / 2.5-Inch SATA External Shockproof Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure Fits UASP SATA III, Black (EC-UK3B) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0126RO1YK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_X6OxxbDM5J88D

Nice thing about this enclosure is that it's lightweight, USB 3, and takes both 7mm and 9.5mm 2.5" HDD. Get the version with the rubber bumper too it's really handy.

Here's a 1TB drive you could put in it ($60):

HGST Travelstar 7K1000 2.5-Inch 1TB 7200 RPM SATA III 32MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0J22423 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B4QESVQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_w9OxxbCNQJJGC

Whether this will work with Plex I've got no clue, will have to wait until the app gets here, but so far I've been very satisfied with sticking a 64GB SD card ($20) in my non-pro Shield for extra internal storage and moving bulk media onto this external drive.

Also yeah I just went through the process of moving my files off the SD card to reformat it as internal, it wasn't that hard just took some time to copy everything. What was really annoying was that I didn't realize until after the fact that you also need to format the external HDD for use on the device (evidently my own exFAT formatting wasn't good enough), so I had to move the 200gb+ that I had just put on it off the drive, reformat, then put it back. No issues now but all that copying took forever even over USB 3.

u/fatgirlstakingdumps · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I didn't see that in the description, but even with that info it's still a bad deal. You can buy the one in OP's post for $999, get a 1tb HDD for an extra $50 and you end up with newegg's price, but you have a 256gb SSD, not 128gb.

I guess you should take into account delivery/tax charges from each seller into account, but if we're justing looking at the laptop itself - Amazon's deal is better.

This is the hard drive that I swapped into my PS4. I chose this one over some of the older 2tb drives for two reasons.

  1. To me at least, the Hybrid part does make a slight difference because the way it works is that it recognizes the files that are used most often and switches them over to that to increase load time, a slight improvement but it is noticeable with certain games.

  2. My new drive is 7200 rpm and not 5400 rpm. That was the big difference, i have seen much faster load times in games like destiny, tomb raider, and other games that have a lot of loading time.

If you are just going for space then get the 2tb but if you want some extra speed, go for the hyrbid.

I've only filed about half of my hard drive with every free game for ps plus and about a dozen physical games.
