It obviously is a myth, because there are breweries that repitch forever with no problems. Harvey's in the UK has been able to repitch the same yeast culture since the 1950s, for example. The kveik brewers in western Norway have been able to reuse the same cultures since centuries ago.

Further, if it wasn't possible to repitch the same culture over and over, how did brewer's yeast become domesticated?

Most of what people think they know about yeast and the history of yeast is totally wrong. Chapter 4 in this book sets the record straight, but obviously you'll have to wait a while for that.
