I took a class on Nazi Germany in college, and one of the required texts was Hitler by Fest. The cover is liberally decorated with swastikas, and HITLER in giant red letters. In order to be able to read it at my job without being bothered, I covered it in brown paper and wrote "INNOCUOUS TEXTBOOK" across the front. Like a charm.

Every house I have owned over the years, I have built bookshelves of varying complexity and posted pictures of them on the Internet. Without fail, someone notices that book. :) It's a very dry, dense book written by a German guy.

It’s really really complicated, but if you read anything about that period, you can’t help but notice the parallels. The Nazi party and the SA grew out of drinking clubs practically identical to the proudboys, as the original antifa were terrorizing the masses, and the left was pushing for the exact same things that they’re pushing for now. The destruction of boarders, religion and class. Abortion and homosexuality were even a large part of their platform.

These drinking clubs started banding together to fight them in the streets, and to secure the cities from terrorism.

I recommend this as a place to start.

In Germany, we had Joachim Fest's biography as a national bestseller. Never read it. The first chapter deals with the time until 1918 (87 pages), so it might contain some useful information about his youth.

Not really about WW2, but the standard biography of Hitler in German is "Hitler" by Joachim Fest.

Mind you, the WW2 part is really short, Fest is more concerned with how Hitler became Hitler. The book was published decades ago (1973, I think), but remains the standard in Germany, not least because Fest was a genius writer.

If you're interested in the run-up to the Nazi regime from a German perspective, I also recommend "Defying Hitler: A Memoir" by Sebastian Haffner. 11 years old in 1914, he recounts his journey from ardent patriot to opponent of the regime.

Despite how Hitler presented himself to the public, he was privately scornful of Christianity. I advise you to read biographies of Hitler that examine all the available evidence in context rather than looking to the cherry-picked primary sources of non-historians with agendas. The biographies by Alan Bullock and Joachim Fest are good choices.
