Lots of great advice on here! Congrats on your new house! I fully support living with an S.O. to get a feel for your chemistry as housemates. Things I always found helpful that nobody else has mentioned yet:

  • ironing board and iron. We have one that goes over the back of the door.
  • A really decent vacuum cleaner, especially if you have carpeting. If you can swing it, get a new one that's highly rated. My first 8 years living in various places with S.O.s and roommates I went through 8-10 $40 walmart vacuum cleaners that barely did any good. When we bought our precious baby shark I was astonished as how well it does its damned job!
  • a dustbuster
  • Lamps. Overhead lighting can get really tiresome, and there's nothing that makes a space cozier than the right kind of lighting. We hit up goodwills and thrift stores and got some decent lamps for our space.
  • Somewhere for guests (and you) to store shoes and coats. Your cleaning will be easier if you take off your shoes at the door, and ask guests to do so as well. We have a cubby bin.
  • Don't overlook the merits of things that have multiple uses. Extra storage is no laughing matter. If you get a couch, consider a futon (so you have a place for guests to sleep).
  • Window treatments can go a VERY long way towards making a space feel complete and homey.
  • Splurge on your bedding. Seriously. Buy the nicest mattress, pillows, sheets and pillowcases you can afford. Getting a great night's sleep and looking forward to bed time is a great way to get settled in, and also make intimate snuggle time much nicer.

Enjoy your new home and space! Don't forget to get artwork or pictures on the walls ASAP so the space feels less overwhelming. Get organizational bins and boxes/tubs to put things that don't have a home yet, and keep your space less cluttered. If you cook, get a crockpot! Enjoy building your space together.
