5.1 over HDMI works fine, nothing to worry about here. Just one tip since you mentioned upgrading to 4k: I would delay buying a new TV or graphics card for now, since HDMI2.1 supports variable frame rates, which is a real game changer. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, Digital Foundry explains it here.

I also got the Steam controller, but am not very happy with it, I actually prefer using my Xbox controller over it in shooters. But some people really like the Steam controller, so it's hard to say if you'd like it or not.

For shooters that are unplayable with controllers I got myself this lap desk (ignore the color, I got mine in black) that works great when I sit on my couch.

I've used XIM since it's 2nd version and have yet to ever sit at a desk while using it.

Then again I don't use a KB either and instead use a Razer Orbweaver/Keypad so I don't have to have room for a large keyboard where I don't use over half the buttons.

Seriously though, I've used lap-boards with all of my XIM devices and have always played on my big screen TV from my couch (not that you can't do that from PC as well, but using a KB/M doesn't mean you have to sit at a desk)

That said, yes sometimes I don't feel like connecting everything and just use a controller.
