Just bought a house! Now I'm looking for a document safe that protects from fire, water, and unauthorized access. Wirecutter recommends Honeywell 1104. Online reviews suggest that it's reliable against fire and water, but I've read complaints about the hardware, suggesting that it's either easy to break into or the key will break. In light of those complaints, I'm reluctant to get this safe.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

(I also plan to get a safe-deposit box, but I want a home safe because it's important to me to protect and have reasonably easy access to passports and copies of important docs.)

I know what you mean as I recently had this problem. I ended up going with this. I'm sure you saw it, and it's another one that has comment(s) about the keys. I think overall the safe is high quality and the key seems quite sturdy to me. I can't imagine breaking it like that one guy did. It's very heavy, but I'm quite happy with it.

This Honeywell has a one-hour rating vs. the more common 30 minute rating. Whatever safe you get, get some silica gel dessicants and change them out every so often.

a lockable safe shaped like a book could hold a smaller notebook

a safe for letter-sized documents

a cheaper document safe

In addition to increasing your privacy, some of these safes provide water-proofing and fire-proofing for your journal. On the other hand if a burglar visits your home (or your have a druggie in your family) she will assume the safe is full of valuables and steal it.

You want to make sure it’s also waterproof. Fires tend to get fought with lots of water which can ruin documents too.

I went with this 1 hour safe. It’s not cheap but it’s built like a tank.

I recently bought a Honeywell safe that's rated to withstand fire for 1 hour. ~$100 on Amazon (shipping was a killer). I wouldn't want to lose my passport, motorcycle titles or other important documents in a fire.

It's not really meant to dissuade theft, though, but I'm not really concerned with that.

Your guess is as good as mine. It was (at the time) a brand new "waterproof" fire safe. According to a hygrometer I have in the room where it's kept (part of a $20 clock, so probably not the most accurate of instruments, but still), it's about 27% humidity right now, which isn't exactly Phoenix, but it's a far cry from "humid."

A glance at an Amazon review (actually, a web search for "waterproof safe moisture," that found a Honeywell review) suggests it may be a common issue with at least Honeywell specifically:

> As many other reviews have stated, this box has a problem with dampness. Within a few days of being in the box all my documents had gotten damp, and unsealed envelopes had gotten moist and sealed themselves. I tried adding additional desiccant packs, but that didn't help. I called Honeywell and they said they were aware of the problem and they recommended opening the box up and airing it out at least once a month

Though we got a small fire safe for the office to keep a backup drive and a notebook with passwords, etc., in, and we have to cycle out silica packets every week or so (they change color).

A few minutes with Google doesn't suggest how the moisture is getting in, but does suggest it's a common problem, with dehumidifiers (especially silica) being a commonly recommended remedy:

Very heartbreaking, sorry to hear, man.
I hold my most valuable cards (>$50) that aren't in decks in a fireproof/waterproof safe like this one:
