What you want is called a crossover.

Here is an example of an inexpensive (<$100) device that will do what you want. Note though that this only has XLR in/out so you will need cables to go from your 1/4" TRS to XLR. Here is such a cable (you will need 2 of course).

If you can afford it, I like DBX's equipment better than Behringer when it comes to this sort of gear. Here is DBX's current equivalent. This one is 1/4" only but a XLR version is also available. I highly recommend moving to all XLR wherever possible in your system as it is the standard for pro audio signal cabling, and you can daisy-chain cables to make them longer.

You have the potential for noise. I've used it in a pinch, but long term, not so much.

Have you thought about getting a small mixer to handle the signal and the levels? Using a mixer would let you control the level of your sub separately. Depending on your budget, you can easily make something work.

You want balanced cables, not unbalanced ones.

The R8 has 1/4in Balanced Outputs, so get TWO (use both for L+R Mono and then you have the right cables for two speakers) of these unless you already have 1/4in TRS to 1/4" TRS cables.

I would recommend staying away from audioengine, there are better options for the price.

$120 - Micca PB42x: These will sounds better than the Audioengine A2+R, but the build quality is not the greatest. These are 'the baseline' for cheap speakers that sound decent.

$200 - PreSonus Eris 4.5: These will provide more bass and sound better overall than the Audioengine A2+R. Build quality is very good on these as well.

$283 - JBL LSR305 + $120 - Scarlett 2i2 + $16 - 2x(XLR to TRS cable): This setup is amazing for the cost. I have been using the JBL LSR305 for quite a while now and they never disappoint. I've heard better, but those speakers are way more expensive. These can be connected directly to your computer through a 2xTRS to 1/8" cable, but I don't recommend it. When I tried that the speakers produced a terrible hissing noise. I recommend the Scarlett 2i2 over other audio interfaces due to its reliability, balanced speaker outs, and great mic pre-amps if you ever decide to get a XLR mic down the road. The cables are needed to connect the speakers to the interface.

Do you mean the soundcard built into the Mac? No, you would need a 3/5mm jack if you want to plug directly into the laptop. Do not do this. Laptop soundcards are mostly awful and an audio interface is required to process sound from your DAW, otherwise you will experience audio crackling/lagging/etc. You're going to have to spend a little money on this, there really are no substitutions for a good soundcard / audio interface. This one is cheap and reliable, a different model than my exact one, but this is a good brand and you really can't go much cheaper than this without a major drop in quality.

Yes the XLR connector should be 3 prong male.

On the back of my Yamaha HS8 monitors, there are female 3-prong connections, I plug the male 3-prong end of my cable into it, that is called an XLR connector. I then plug the other end of the cable, a 1/4 TRS shielded connector, into the back of my Presonus Audiobox iOne. Make sure that it is 1/4 TRS and not a 3.5mm audio jack, as that will be too small to fit into the audio interface.

These cables look fine. They're cheap, have good reviews, and are balanced/shielded cables which means you shouldn't have interference issues from other electronic devices.

Conclusively, you need these items, but if you find a cheaper audio interface with two TRS ports, go for it, as long as reviews show it's reliable. You also need two 1/4 TRS to XLR Male cables, balanced. Items:

The amp could be directly connected, it has xlr inputs, so your local audio store will have the right cables, you will need speakons for the output side going to your speakers. Amazon also has the cables you could use.
