To make them less obtrusive I cut off the wide end and insert the rest, then it is hardly noticeable. Just be careful not to get it stuck in the ear, especially if it is raining and it gets wet. Had that happen once, just had to use a tweezer to get it out.

You're getting good suggestions on firearms to look at (M&P Shield in 9mm!), but I wanted to ensure that you understood that you need to buy more than just a gun and that $500 isn't enough money to get started carrying safely. I second this suggestion! I get really fixated on noises sometimes and so I need to basically block them out 100%. I use https://amzn.to/2ptpBYQ and they're really comfortable (I'm a side sleeper). Also the bag has lasted me 2 years!

Getting shitty sleep is the worst. It just makes every other problem feel so much bigger--and sometimes actually does, like in job or school performance.

Have you tried ear plugs or white noise machines? I use these foam ear plugs when motorcycle riding, and they muffle everything way down

I use these ear plugs, Best so far I've used. My dad enjoys making the loudest sounds possible at 5 in the morning, Being able to block out that noise has been a game changer

I used to have this problem and tried several brands. I would put ear plugs in as far as they would go and my ears would hurt. If I didn't put them in that far, they would fall out during the night.

I love them! They are just really soft and squishy so I put them half in but they never fall out. I also bought a Marpac Dohm white noise machine but I think I prefer the sound of a fan in summer.

They're cheap, comfortable, effective, and I'm pretty sure they're used by construction workers who need to be able to hear alarms. Anyway, I've never missed an alarm on my phone even though it's set to the lowest setting. Certain frequencies are able to go though the earplugs so I recommend getting these earplugs and testing different alarms to see what you hear best.

Agreed, squishy foam ear plugs will do ya good. I never go on vacation without a handful of these, just never know

Howard Leight Laser Lites. Cheap, comfortable, and the best sound reduction.

I always use a pair along with music playing through my Sena SMH5 headseat. Works great.

They also come in corded versions if that's what you prefer.

I also have times when I need to block out all noises - sometimes during migraines, sometimes I just need to concentrate. I often use foam earplugs in ADDITION TO noise protection ear muffs. I don't ever leave the house looking like this, but it works great for getting heads-down into some concentration-required work in my home office. This combination is VERY, VERY effective at cutting down unwanted noises. Just my two cents.

I bought these, they come individually wrapped in pairs when I got them. I always keep a few still in the wrapper to give to friends if needed. Extremely comfortable. comfortable enough to sleep with them in and you don't wake up feeling sore. Sadly that link looks to be shipping knock offs now based on the recent reviews. But that's the brand/model.

The Wirecutter recommends Mack’s Ultra Soft Foam earplugs for travellers. They say besides being comfortable and cheap, they have a noise reduction rate of 32 dB.

In his 2017 gear post, Tynan recommends the Laser Lite ear plugs. He likes them for how snugly they fit in his ears.

Both these come in pack of 50 for $7 or $8.
