To go full linux using a chromebook you want one of the haswell celerons and 4GB of ram. This means an acer c720, HP chromebook 14 or Dell Chromebook 11. I believe these are all older models not currently in production so get them while you can. I don't think you can get a 720 with 4GB of ram any more. The only HP chromebook 14 I could find with 4GB of ram also had 4G which means its a little more expensive.

I love the HP 14-q070nr. (the newer version)

You can find refurb'd models on sale once in a while for like <$300.

I've had one for almost a year now, no complaints. There are a lot of haters of the HP14 /r/chromeos .

If you are interested in the HP Chromebook 14, you can get them on Amazon Warehouse Deals. I specifically bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/HP-14-q070nr-14-Inch-Chromebook-T-Mobile/dp/B00FGOTBQO/ref=sr_1_5?m=A2L77EE7U53NWQ&s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1404847871&sr=1-5

It was missing the SIM card, but Amazon refunded me 20% and T-Mobile shipped me a new one for free when I called them individually.

There's a model with 2 and 4 gb ram. I'm really happy with mine. Woot.com has refurbished models like every couple weeks for around $200. Also at the end of the month, they're releasing an updated version with a different processor and better screen.

Black Friday is next week. Shop around.

Also, if you get a screen with high enough resolution, you can just sit closer instead of getting a bigger screen. It'll be lighter and cheaper, and you can spend that extra money on an SSD instead. Getting a big screen at that price point is going to force you to make compromises somewhere. I suggest 14.1" max, with 13.3" being closer to ideal. A 14" HP Chromebook seems like it'd be ideal for him, and would save him a bundle, too. Dat 7-second boot... Also T-Mobile will give free 4G for life if you buy the 4G model. Seems like a no-brainer.

Also, try /r/SuggestALaptop if you haven't already.

> However I haven't done anything more resource intensive than a few steam games (Portal 2, Borderlands 2), which of course were limited by the processor but still ran surprisingly well.

So, I have an HP 14 Chromebook (its exactly the same as the c720 except with 4gb of ram). Borderlands 2 is on sale over at Steam, and this thread came up on google.

Is it really playable, or is it like, just barely playable enough that if you're desperate to play Borderlands 2 you'll put up with it?

I got it a couple of years ago off of woot I think -- I'm not sure it is available new anymore: here is what I think it is: http://www.amazon.com/HP-14-q070nr-14-Inch-Chromebook-T-Mobile/dp/B00FGOTBQO

If she is using the youtube tools to edit it then she will be fine. Anything website based is usable. She can use Google Hangouts, but not sure how that would work with her friends that don't have Hangouts ;) 16gb is small and it is basically just the OS on it from what I can tell. Drive storage is where everything seems to be stored at as far as downloads and stuff like that (but I haven't done much of this), IIRC Google gives you extra storage for buying a CB (could be an old gift though).

I bought a refurbished HP 14 and love it (price is way off from what I paid). It's a white soft plastic, so it is kinda hard to keep clean, that is really my only gripe. The batter lasts forever!!! I actually left mine in my bag for 2 or 3 months with no use, picked it up and the batter was still about 1/2 way charged.

Personally, I have recommended these to all my friends who want a laptop for surfing the web and watching Netflix and things along that line. The low cost and usability are perfect for eachother. Also, if she somehow gets a virus, quick and easy reset puts you back to factory without losing your data (since it is stored on Chrome ;) )

This is the model you're looking for. Unfortunately, it's discontinued, so the few that are left are going up in price.

I don't think any of the new HP14's (with the Tegra processor) have 4G LTE built-in, but their website is so lacking in technical details, it's hard to know for sure.

It's an old HP Chromebook 14 on T-mobile. Not sure of the radio. I also tried two different t-mobile sim cards. Here is a link to the model. https://www.amazon.com/HP-14-q070nr-14-Inch-Chromebook-T-Mobile/dp/B00FGOTBQO

No, it looks like you can get it elsewhere, like here: http://www.amazon.com/HP-14-q070nr-14-Inch-Chromebook-T-Mobile/dp/B00FGOTBQO

I'd skip on EOS if I were you, from your use examples you don't need it. T-Mo has a "free 4G for life" deal going on right now, you can get it on Amazon.

I would like all the audio from these devices coming out of my sound bar. How do you guys suggest I do this? The DVD player isn't as necessary, but I really want the Chromecast and DirecTV sound transition to be fast. I prefer moving an Aux cable around everywhere rather than AV cables, although I haven't been able to figure out the Aux setup (if this is even possible right now)

Thanks so much for your help

I also have an HP 14 Chromebook, although a different model. Instead, I've been using the Google official runtime, and I don't have any issue other than logging in. It might be your account type. Skype wouldn't log me in using my Microsoft account, I'm guessing it's because of servers and etc. I was able to log in using a Skype account. My messages work just fine and whatnot.

I just tried it with ARChon. Messaging works fine as well.

I think it's best if you try it on a different/dummy account, of a different type, before anything else.
