They use pentalobe screws to prevent you from opening it.

Hmmmmm That might be a loose screw on the case bottom.

You need a pentalobe screw driver to tighten them.

You can remove the SSD from the 2010 air.

If you have anything you don't want some one seeing on it Spend the 7$ to crack it open so you can remove it. I don't think you could wipe it in target disk mode or anything.

But if you don't care just put it on ebay as broken with water damage and start the bid at 99¢

From what you're describing, I would imagine this is fan related... Totally guessing of course, but I picture something trapped in the exhaust machinery which doesn't generate any noise when the fan is running fast enough, but "scrapes" just the right way when the fan is moving a bit slower.

If you've got a Pentalobe screwdriver, no harm in taking a peek inside just to make sure. I once had this happen to me. :P
