I have the one your looking at and a 4 lamp T-5HO, I like the T-5 a lot. The bulb replacements for the first are like $70, T-5 are like $8 a peace. This is what I use http://www.amazon.com/EnviroGro-4Ft-Tube-Fixture-Bulbs-FLT44/dp/B005H1C7NA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1397239752&sr=8-3&keywords=t5+grow+lights

Hi I am by NO means super knowledgeable about these but since nobody else has given it a shot here we are, haha.

I don't think the wattage of that light is high enough to support plant growth. The spectrum/temperature/K is sufficient, but you need more powerful lights. If that makes sense.

I have used these in tandem with a south-facing window; they are not enough to support my plants without any help, but prevented etiolation in most of my plants: some had to be moved extremely close to grow normally so... (plus I found the purple unpleasant)

I invested recently in this light, which is pricier, but has been supporting the plants on its own -- no window. It's also white which is a lot more pleasant to look at IMO. Note the specs on these and see if you can find something that works for you! Best wishes

I took three out of the 4 bulbs out of it, however, because it looked like it was cooking them.

I use a ballast and 4 foot t5 bulbs which i bought from incredigrow on macleod trail. Its attached to a rolling shelf from costco. Theres also pulleys that let me raise and lower the lights. Everything can also be purchased for cheaper on amazon.

So having done some experiments with a lux meter, it looks like the CFLs might be cheaper overall than T5 + ballast + fixture for roughly the same amount of light per square inch, but the lighting is much less even.

Meanwhile, a 4ft, 4 tube fixture just came on the market for $70 less than the Hydrofarm I found last time...

I have both an LED Ebb and Flow system running and i do basil, bib and Paris Island lettuce's in that system and i am growing some leafy salad bowl lettuce on a rack under T5 lights on the side of the room by just watering the flat each day. The T5's are legit and will indeed grow herbs and lettuce with ease but you want to keep the lights close so it may be best to do similar sized herbs under the T5 and like the above poster stated, the light penetration into tall plants may not be the greatest. Stuff like cilantro, perhaps a dwarf basil, dill, chives would grow like crazy under a well placed T5.

A good $250-$500 range LED is going to be stronger then a T5 and i am not suggesting a T5 is better then a real deal LED im just suggesting that a T5 is an easy entry option that will indeed work well.

Want my opinion? Start out by getting a light and a few 1020 flats, 2 sheets of grodan rockwool cubes 1.5" some nutes, ph stuff, tds pen and grow them for a bit outside a system and under lights by just watering the flats with the rockwool cubes each day. In like 3 weeks you can be using your new herbs to cook and its cheap to start out and could even move them into a system at a month or so into it if you wish to do so.

Here are the gold standard T5 lights below - both are gold standard hydroponic T5 lights widely used and time tested and are both great.
