Would you consider a Tupperdor?

Sistema 1870: $20

  • Check locally, Target or Home Goods might have this for less.
  • Any of the Sistema containers are good options. They have clamps and a gasket in the lid to make sure the container stays airtight. Choose the one that fits your needs or a similar product. The 1870 will hold around 80 cigars.

    Boveda Packs: $17

  • Choose the pack that is right for you. Personally I like 65%.
  • If you go with a different size container, you might need to adjust how many packs you get. Remember to get the number of packs per the capacity of the container, not how many cigars are currently in the container. This page will help you determine how many packs you will need.

Digital Hygrometer: HygroSet II - $14 or Caliber IV - $24

  • Any correctly callibrated digital hygrometer will work.
  • I have both of the above and they are good options

    Spanish Cedar Trays: $13

  • These are not needed, however work well for organization
  • Plastic trays will also work.
  • If you choose a different container, make sure the trays fit.

  1. Buy this
  2. Buy this
  3. Buy this

    Then...

  4. Wash out #1 and let it dry so there is no more plastic smell.
  5. Put #2 and 1-2 of #3 into #1 with your cigars.
  6. Check to ensure that rh is between 60-65% after a couple days.
  7. Walk away

    Months later...

  8. Check if boveda is getting hard as a puck. If it is, replace it.
  9. Take the hard boveda pack and put it in another container with distilled water until it puffs back up. Dry it off and throw it in a ziplock to save to replace the ones in the tupperware.
  10. Repeat

Tupperware Though this has been cheaper at Target. Ship to store there might be worth it to you.

Hygrometer 1 or 2 depedning on what you like.

Boveda You will need two per container you get. They also have 4 packs. I would suggest 65% RH with a tupperdor.

The good news is cheaphumidors.com is actually a fairly well respected site by this sub. I can only hope that's where he got it =) We even get a nice 15% off with them. (See the side bar - Cigar Deals)

That being said, grab a couple of these bad boys - Bodeva 84% packs. You should only need one to season your humidor. Follow the instructions on/in the package.

For calibrating - Install the analog one, and forget it. Its now a glorified cork for your humidor. Grab a digital one and a calibration kit.

Welcome to the family!

A few bux outside your range but definitely worth the money:

It can be found cheaper - shop around.

Looking at the cheaper ones on Amazon - they're so unreliable I would not bother.

Ditch the analog and upgrade to digital

u/Not-A-Peep · 4 pointsr/cigars

Some of the most blueneck people you'll ever meet in your life use tupperdores. I would not suggest you use that hygrometer as it has more of an household/environmental application and is likely going to take up way too much room in any humidor. You want something like this Caliber IV or this HygroSet II.

Also, this is the exact acrylic jar started my collection with and it worked great until I ran out of room. Now I use it for incoming/quarantine purposes. I suggest you do what I did and lose the humidifier puck it comes with and use a couple 65% Boveda packs instead.

u/SantoroMT · 4 pointsr/cigars

Tupperware container with a good seal on it, boveda pack at 65 or 69%, and a hygrometer and you're all ready to go.

u/spacebudda · 3 pointsr/cigars

Yea I like that I didnt have to calibrtae it. I was looking at this hygrometer, but for convenience I went with the Xikar. just drop it and the crymistat and in a hour or so it was reading 72. A little high but I can deal with it.

u/Ohrobohobo · 3 pointsr/cigars

Are you looking for a humidor for him to present to friends? Or just something to help him with cigar smoking? A Tupperware container cleaned out (lemon juice helps with the plastic smell) seals a lot better and is easier to maintain humidity.

I would have a raging boner if presented with a tupperware container with a digital hydrometer (~$15-20 and you can get on amazon no problem) some bovedas, (only need one in the tupperdor , also Amazon) and a cigar or two. It'll serve the same purpose, you won't need to worry about seasoning the humidor before he can use it (it takes time to do "right" and lets him know you care about him. This is my opinion, as someone who doesn't show off their humidor, and lets me spend more on smokes and have the same purpose.

u/rtaylo · 3 pointsr/shroomers

To be honest, they can just pop up over night. Your humidity looks hella low. It should be like 90%.
Don't mist your cakes directly, but remove the lid and mist those walls like 3-4 times a day.

Edit: Grab a Hydrometer

u/Thjoth · 3 pointsr/cigars

A cheap hydrometer probably isn't going to help your cigars much (could you even fit it in your humidor?) but a cheap digital hygrometer would be just the ticket. I use this one and it works very well.

u/JerusalEmAll · 3 pointsr/cigars

ok, cancel you order from Thompson and lose their web address.

Then order these for humidification and this fo peace of mind.

edit: and if you don't have a tupperware yet, anything that looks like this with the sealing gasket will work. They sell them at target, walmart and everywhere online

u/jtread4 · 3 pointsr/cigars

Most will recommend the Sistema 1870.

You can optionally get a Spanish Cedar Drawer for organization.

You will need a hygrometer.

And finally Boveda. Most people will recommend 62% or 65% for a tupperdor setup.

u/Schytzo · 3 pointsr/cigars
u/nonfiction_1968 · 3 pointsr/cigars

I'd be surprised if the humidor is truly seasoned after only 48 hours and no real hygrometer to know where it landed and/or held.

I suggest getting one of these

u/oneeyebear · 3 pointsr/cigars

i have had this one in my amazon cart for a while, it would be nice to know if anyone here has used it and how their experience with it has been. This might be a little too big for my humidor, but i will have to measure. It says 2x2x.5

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H6CZQE/

u/kds1398 · 3 pointsr/cigars

Not related to seasoning, but 3 things you should be aware of:

  1. These cheap humidors with glass tops/panels on the front are very likely to leak. I guess every now and then you could buy one that doesn't by luck, but I'd just assume that it's as leaky as a sieve and seal it to avoid problems. Most people seem to use aquarium sealant like this one to seal the edges from the inside and eliminate the issue.

  2. The analog hygrometer on the front should be treated as decorative only and you shouldn't rely on the readings as they are well known to be very inaccurate even after calibration. You should pick up a digital hygrometer and use that inside your humidor. I have 4 of this one in my humidors and they have been good to me. I know that this digital hygrometer should fit in that slot, but it's quite expensive. One way or another, since you should already be sealing the glass, I'd seal around the hygrometer as well.

  3. The humidification system they provide is probably the same foam filled crap that's in most of these. You should throw it away immediately and switch to one of 4 solutions: boveda 65% packs (4 should be the minimum for your humidor, you can use more if you want), 65% Heartfelt beads (I use the large tube in a similar sized humidor and this is my personal preference), HCM beads (not too familiar with these, but I know they are popular and work well), or kitty litter (Exquisicat crystals from petsmart is the popular option here).
u/Chitties_6941 · 2 pointsr/cigars

I've also used this one, and found it does the job just fine. Pretty small, around 1 1/2 inch diameter or so.

u/CCFTW · 2 pointsr/cigars

Some people say they are, some people rave about them. I purchased that exact model from Amazon as my first humidor and it never leaked nor had any defects. Holds a constant humidity and took me less than 3 days to fully season it.

You will only need one of these to keep it humid, and I would recommend this as well to keep an accurate gauge on it.

u/caffeineTX · 2 pointsr/cigars

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H6CZQE/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
I have this in my humi and I think it is recommended somewhere in the FAQ. I bought it with my humidor, comes with a self adhesive magnet attached to the back and it comes pre calibrated. replace the external with another analog for aesthetic looks and stick the digital one on the lid for accuracy.

u/GoWithTheEbbAndFlow · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I use to do it by feel, but I would sometimes fuck it up, even after many harvests. One day too long and you can fuck up a dry.

So I got these, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H6CZQE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

It has a magnetic back, so it sticks to the underside of a mason jar lid. And you can calibrate it very easily, just place it in a zip lock bag with a bottle cap full of wet table salt, and let it sit overnight. The meter should read 75%, and if not, just turn the little dial up or down (1 click per percent) to adjust and you're good to go.

u/kinsmate · 2 pointsr/ballpython

I'm sure you're gonna get lots of in-depth information from people more knowledgeable than me, but here's a quick write up!
I would recommend moving her tank if she is in the sunlight during the day, but being in a bright room is fine. UTH is necessary! A thermostat that it is plugs into is too. Like this one. BPs (and other snakes?) need belly heat. I have a bulb to help raise the ambient temperature, but it dries out the tank quickly.

Adult BPs can have about 40 gallon tanks if you're getting that kind of enclosure, but I've heard they're also fine in the 20L. Tubs are also an option, but not one I know a lot about. They let out humidity easily but it is manageable. I got my tank during the dollar per gallon sale at Petco (June or July I think). Don't feed your snake in a separate enclosure! Handling before and after eating is stressful to them.

Skipping stuff I'm not confident on giving any advice on-
I have a digital thermometer/hygrometer like this one, and it is a must. BPs need around 65-70% humidity during shed, and that makes it much easier to monitor. With these mesh-top tanks, humidity can be difficult to control, but with regular misting with a spray bottle, plexiglas/tin foil (I've also heard a damp towel works) covering part of the top it's manageable. You can also add moist moss if you need to.

Good luck with your new pet!

u/Pono_kai · 2 pointsr/cigars

u/frenchst · 2 pointsr/Guitar

The target for temperature and humidity you should shoot for is 70 degrees (F), and 45% humidity. If you can't maintain your house at somewhere near that (+/- 10 degrees, +/- 10%) you should probably keep it in the case.

Grab one of these for your case, and one to keep in the room where you play the guitar. And make sure to calibrate them with the included instructions.

Buy a Hygrometer to check the humidity level in your home.

Comfortable range is around 40%. During winter in my home, I have seen it as low at 16%. Dry hands and static everywhere!

Now I regularly run a humidifier during winter to keep the humidity up.

u/Dr0me · 2 pointsr/Charcuterie

i normally start with like 75%-80% for the first week or so then drop it down to 70% for the rest of the aging. This allows the meat to dry out slowly at first so the casing doesn't harden and trap in moisture which can lead to spoilage. I think it is important to get an adjustable hydrometer and calibrate it so you know your actual humidity and not assumed. However, if your meat didn't spoil but just hardened around the edges, you can vacuum seal the end result for a couple weeks and it will even it out and improve the mouthfeel.
this is a good hydrometer and this is a good calibration kit

I did a pancetta in a wine fridge. Turned out great. I recommend you invest in one of these so you know what's going on in the fridge. I used a small of water with a sponge in it to regulate the humidity.

u/Bhertzing · 1 pointr/cigars

How big of a humidor are we talking?

I was thinking of something else. I often get the digital ones from the local store that have temp and percentage. Something like this http://amzn.com/B000H6CZQE

u/cozmanian · 1 pointr/cigars

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TOK352/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This one is my first and I love it. I have put a drymistat tube in and also a digital hygrometer. Stays around 68% humidity now. Just make sure to follow the directions with the humidor in seasoning it correctly and to calibrate your hygrometer. Simple salt with water in a bag (you can find specific instructions elsewhere) is good enough.

drymistat - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QCAGM0/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

digital hygrometer - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H6CZQE/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I realize those put it above 30 bucks... But you can get the digital hygrometer and drymistat later. Just calibrate your analog hygrometer and use either distilled water or some type of "cigar juice" in the humidifier disc and it should work fine. There are a few ways to keep the humidity levels right.

u/Itkovan · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Yes absolutely since the AC is removing moisture from the air. I had the exact same problem as you, in fact it even led to me getting sick several times before I thought about it, and identified the source. I put a humidifier directly in front of the fan/blower part of the AC unit in order to distribute the moist air throughout the room.

Nowadays with whole house AC I keep a hygrometer and a humidifier on a timer. (I don't trust hygrometers built in to humidifiers. Actually I would buy an adjustable hygrometer along with a way to calibrate it.) With a way to measure the humidity I try to keep it at the minimum that doesn't cause problems for my throat. Experiment and find that minimum since too much humidity is bad for mold and could lead to a whole new set of issues.

u/the_errancy · 1 pointr/cigars

The time spent is to ensure that the air in the bag has enough time to acclimate to exactly 75%. Your hygrometer could be reading +3 or so percent, as the humidity in the bag is most likely not 75% after only having been sealed for 20 minutes. I'm not pulling this out of my butt, but from multiple sources.

First from Wikipedia: "A saturated table salt (Sodium Chloride) bath will eventually give a reading of approximately 75%. Other salts have other equilibrium humidity levels: Lithium Chloride ~11%; Magnesium Chloride ~33%; Potassium Carbonate ~43%; Potassium Sulfate ~97%. Salt solutions will vary somewhat in humidity with temperature and they can take relatively long times to come to equilibrium, but their ease of use compensates somewhat for these disadvantages in low precision applications, such as checking mechanical and electronic hygrometers."

Here's the study the wikipedia article referenced.

Additional sources regarding calibrating hygrometers, all of which suggest waiting between 4 and 24 hours to calibrate. My hygrometer came with literature suggesting that calibration should last 36 hours!

Source 1

Source 2

Source 3 - shortest waiting period 4 hours

Source 5

Source 4 - for fun from the Hermit Crab Association

Because the air in your bag was more than likely not 75% humidity after such a short sealing, your hygrometer is most likely not calibrated properly.

u/wiresmoke · 1 pointr/Charcuterie

Stick with it, I have found that my humidifier and humidistat has not been necessary. Whether dry aging beef or curing 10# of chorizo, high RH has been my battle. I let the wine fridge do the temp regulation and have a CPU fan pushing through a filter with a filter on the other side providing pass through. Things that have proven necessary: Timer for fan- a real PITA to figure out how to program but great: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H4XP7QS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

From what I've seen most people have these it's what I have and had no problems.

Edit: the deal you posted above actually looks pretty decent I spent 40 on cbid for a very similar humidor in another color wood, and if you add up the rest it seems a pretty decent deal that I'd go for if I had the money.

u/ISaidNoDecaf · 1 pointr/cigars

I'd suggest picking up a hygrometer (this is the one I've got) first and seeing what humidity levels you're getting out of your current setup. I'm actually sort of in the same boat as you, since the 70% RH I'm getting is on the high side of the acceptable range, and I'm about to order some 62% packs to see if I can bring it down.

Edit: After doing some reading, I tried putting a shot glass full of uncooked rice in my tupperdor for a few minutes, and the humidity shot down to 64%. I just took the rice out, and I'll see if it holds.

u/craiclad · 1 pointr/cigars

Ok that sounds good to me! I'm planning on making a small tupperador for myself as well, so I'm going to order two hygrometers (these ones) and enough bovedas for both this humidor and my own tupperador.

How many/which type of boveda do you think I should order? I was thinking six of the 72s (three or four for the humidor, one or two for my tupperador), and then one 65 to bring these old cigars up to scratch?

Also, what ct would you say this humidor is? 50ct? 100?

So since these folks seemed to have answered most your questions, the only thing I will add is where to get your first humi/cigars.
If you want a one-stop-shop, humidor&cigars combo, check out this website for good combo deals.

If you're looking for maximum storage space and don't care about looks...buy a cooler, humidity beads, and a digital hygrometer and you'll now have a maximum storage space coolidor for the fraction of what a wood humidor would cost. (If you go this route let me know if you would like more info about setting up the coolidor).

Then go wild on the samplers at Cigar.com, CigarsInternational, CigarBid, CigarMonster.

u/Unique_NY · 1 pointr/cigars

It won't necessarily break your cigars, but that kind of humidity can induce mold in the right conditions. They may also smoke kind of wonky. Definitely look at 65% RH ones!

Also nab yourself a hygro. Something like this will work fine once it is calibrated. That way you know if your cigars are in ideal conditions.

u/electrodan · 1 pointr/Guitar

I use one of these for my humidors and they work flawlessly. Be sure to do a salt test to get it calibrated.

That being said, I never use a hydrometer at home. As long as you're careful to refill your humidifier regularly it's pretty hard to fuck up.

Wow, a lot is happening in this post! Firstly, congratulations on your recent marriage.

Spain is the best for cuban cigars. A monte 2 for your first cigar is also a great start and a great way to make a memory with your dad.

The tupperware is a good makeshift humidor. I would recommend getting some of these in the 65% or 69% Rh variety. One will easily work for a tupperware container. They are also pretty accurate, so a digital hygrometer might not be necessary in the short term, but in the future I would definitely consider buying one if you start to get serious about cigars and want to hold them for any length of time.

Again, congratulations!

u/rsf330 · 1 pointr/cigars

If they're the smaller ones, I'd use at least two - the amount of empty space is usually the ruling factor I use; if it's packed full of cigars then you won't need as many packs. However... with the boveda packs there technically isn't a way to 'overdo' it, since they're self-regulating. So, all three should be fine. Just keep an eye on them, when they start to get hard and thin, that's the time to order some new ones (or try and revitalize the ones you already have).

For hygrometers, I use these in my tupperdors.

There is a digital hygrometer that will fit in that front hole, but amazon reviews don't look too good for it. They sound like they can possibly just be user error though because it's the same brand (hygroset) as the very popular hygroset ii that people use inside their humidors.

I thought about getting one myself to try to see for myself, but there were 2 factors working against it. First, it's more expensive than the hygroset ii (internal). And second, I think it ruins the look of the humidor. The analog that comes with the humidor looks a lot nicer. Since you have a glasstop, it's easy to look at a hygrometer sitting inside the humidor.

In case you're curious though, this is the front mount digital.

First off, I would suggest to ditch the analog hygrometer and pick up a digital one like this one and calibrate it. That way, you know what the real rh of your humidor is since the analog ones are notorious for being inaccurate.

What is your humidification source? I would recommend picking up a 65% 60g Boveda pack and you will never really have to worry about your humidity for a few weeks before you need to recharge it.

Is your humidor sealing properly? Stick a dollar bill over the edge and close your humidor. How hard is it to pull out? If it is stuck or takes a lot of effort, you have a good seal. Repeat this with all sides. Also, if it is a glasstop humidor, you might be leaking at the glass. Some aquarium sealant will help there
