There ARE products available in forms other than paste, such as IndigoXtreme, but paste is cheaper and similar in effectiveness. IndigoXtreme is $20 (USD) for 2 TIM pads, whereas even a higher tier paste such as IC Diamond works out to cost less than $2 per application.
There may be cheaper options than IndigoXtreme, but from my basic research, there are few non-paste TIMs on any tier list. It's way easier to find a paste than anything else.
I would give this a shot first before pulling the trigger on a new computer. A 920 is still a modern CPU w/ some life left in it!
I believe I bought this off of amazon, and I also bought the ArtiClean kit that you can see midway down the page. It worked great.
However, if you get a new CPU cooler, it should come w/ some new thermal paste. I believe mine came w/ it pre-applied.
I also disassembled my GPU and re-seated that and cleaned that bad boy out as well. Got a 10 degree drop on my Nvidia GTS 240 by doing that. Highly recommend.

No, I didn't use the same paste. I went with Arctic MX4 originally. After I posted this, I worked on it for another week or so. I ended up using a much thicker compound recommended to me by another user and saw much better results. I also did a bit more lapping and made sure the cooler was more uniformly pressing on all sides of the GPU.

So, A temperature at mid 60s is perfectly fine, high 80s and above you should start getting more worried. If you want lower temperatures try getting a liquid cooler, (such as This One or re apply with higher quality thermal paste, here's a good one IC Diamond 24 Carat 4.8 Gram Thermal Compound Here's some thermal paste.
If dust has built up, you could try using compressed air to remove it. Dust can clog fans, an other devices.
Also, if something is stealing your resources in the background, I recommend running a virus scan. What are your highs at after the idle temperature increase?
I suggest using the pea method and then putting the heatsink over. The paste will spread out under the pressure of the heatsink and that method is the best way to avoid air pockets. DO NOT lift up the heatsink after you placed it on, just screw it in.

If you have thermal paste already on the cpu then clean it using a coffee filter or paper towel with isopropyl alcohol that is at least 90%

I used some Diamond Thermal Paste https://www.amazon.com/IC-Diamond-24-Carat-Compound/dp/B0042IBAOG on a computer build 5-6 years ago because it was the hot thing (cold I guess) and it was such a pain to work with. You had to heat it up and it was still super thick. It ended up scratching the processor and heat sync when I removed it. Never again. It would be cool to quantify it if you could. Perhaps on a cheaper light? build one with one without? Or some type of test pill?
You're still better off getting a good aftermarket cooler. It will drop temps by a lot. Having aftermarket thermal compound such as Arctic silver is even better. Just make sure not to use CPU thermal compund on GPU. Liquid metal TIMs do tend to degrade pretty quickly.

not electrically conductive, lasts a while... not THE BEST thermal performance though. Still decent. It can definitely scratch your IHS though so be careful if you're worried about warranties(note: AMD's non-pro CPU warranties are only for 1 year now so... they're pretty much worthless)... I've had a CPU die on me though so...

You've basically answered all of my questions, now I just need to google guides for the actual overclocking. I believe there are an abundance of guides on how to overclock the 2500k, so I should be fine. My last two questions are: what's an approximate amount of GHz you think I could get up to with the TX3, and also is this the thermal paste you were referring to?
