My design philosophy is it has to be easy to use by my wife's standards. It can't be complicated to the point that she's not going to bother. It can't be setup in such a way that only I understand it.
Funny you should mention lamps. That's the one device that has plenty of smart adapters, but none of the obvious choices fit my design philosophy. For example a smart bulb comes to mind. The problem with that is first time my wife turns it off using the lamp's switch, my smart bulb becomes as powerless as any "dumb" bulb. Another device you might use is a wall plug switch such as the Wemo Switch. The first problem here is the plug I plan to use is behind furniture. Even if it wasn't I'm back to the same problem as the smart bulb: my wife would forget to use the wall switch and use the lamp's switch instead. Again my smart switch is rendered useless. So what's the solution? I'm looking at this. It is a smart device that also has a local switch. After installing it I would unscrew the lamp's switch so my wife can't accidentally use it. Over time she would get used to using the smart device's local switch. The only problem with it is it's damn expensive.

The manual control is a tablet top remote. The Lutron bridge supplies the WiFi component.

Instead of using the lamps integrated switch to turn it off, the Socket also has an ON/OFF switch on it as well. So, you can use that switch to turn the lamp on and off and still keep the lamp smart. When you turn the lamp off, via the Socket switch, you will still be able to turn it on from your phone as well.

Can you use WiFi socket adapters instead? I'm not sure what socket size that is, but could one of these could possibly be a solution?
