Most android devices have this functionality, you just need a cheap OTG usb cable and that's it. It also works with bluetooth mice and keyboards. It also works great for tablets and can help you increase productivity.

I realized i was able to download full torrents onto my phone. Once done id transfer them to a usb drive.

Also that cable lets you hook up usb remotes. I use a wired 360 remote to play Grand Theft Auto

I can play almost all my games on Steam even those which are not on NVIDIA's list. :)

Here's what I do for my books and comics: Moon+ Reader has built in .cbr/.cbz support in addition to being a most excellent ereader. I also have calibre installed on my home pc. Calibre has OPDS support, which means that if it is enabled and you have the correct ports forwarded, then you can have it be your comics and books "cloud server". Coupled with a dynamic dns server like the free one you can get at noip.com, this allows you to have a static "domain". So in essence, I have my own online library where everything is stored, and when I want a new book / comic I just download it on demand so I don't have to store every copy of fables / the unwritten when all I want is a few issues at a time.
Granted, this is sort of an advanced setup and takes some research to do. Google books allows you to upload your own epubs and will replicate much of the same stuff, but .cbr doesn't work yet and I don't want to have to convert all my comics to epub (which is possible in calibre, I'm just lazy).

For movies / tv shows, again I keep everything stored on my home pc and have the plex server running. On the tablet, I have the plex app. So whenever I want to watch a show, it gets streamed from my home pc. This requires decent upload speeds on your home connection.

Alternatively you can store all the files on google drive / dropbox, however unless you pay for extra storage space, you will be doing a lot of data management. This also doesn't solve the problem for when you are offline.

Your final option is grabbing an OTG cable on the cheap and any usb stick.

The N7 (and most Android devices) support USB OTG that allows you to connect a USB device via an adapter.

Pro-tip, if you have an Android phone running version 4 or above you can buy a "USB On The Go" cable like this one for $1.50 which will allow you to plug your GoPro into you phone via USB and you can view/delete and even upload the videos right from you phone. Much cheaper than buying the GoPro LCD.

Nexus 10 seems perfect for you. It has USB OTG, HDMI out, 10" 2560x1600 (gorgeous) screen, and is just an overall amazing device for $399. You can get a 32 GB for $499, but not necessary if you have your own hard drive. I'd get the $399 so you have money to spend on buying a keyboard/mouse.

As for ebooks, and even bigger YES. I have all of my books that I need to read for AP Literature on it, as well as my AP Psychology and AP Government and Politics text books that I, ehem, aquired online. Sadly, I couldn't find my PreCalc or AP European History (the one on the far left) online.

Also, when you get it. Unlock the bootloader immediately. Before you even really do anything with it. Because if you choose to root it at a later date, you won't have to unlock the bootloader, which wipes the device back to factory settings. Really saves a lot of stress/trouble. Also, if you do root, get StickMount, which allows you to connect a USB storage, whether it's a flash drive, hard drive, etc, with that USB OTG cable I linked earlier.

Best part of a bluetooth keyboard for me that is I'll keep it in my backpack. It's thinner and lighter than a book.

You could get an OTG connector and a USB card reader. I'm pretty sure you'd be able to get pictures off of a card that way, someone else might want to chyme in here. Can't help on the raw edits on the tablet though.

For clarity, it's a USB OTG male microUSB to female USB that is required to plug in a USB controller(or any other USB device), like so. A male-male adapter wouldn't do you much good.

I use an otg adapter and a wireless pc adapter for my wireless 360 controller. I didn't have to install anything extra. I imagine if you had a wired controller you would just need the otg adapter.

You can usually download files from the phone as long as you enabled USB debugging which I hope you did. If you have password protected or encrypted your phone, then it would have to be unlocked to do this.

I'm considering it for USBOTG (USB On-The-Go) so I can use the cable I have to expand connected storage using thumb drives. I'd also like to run droidwall to restrict some network communications, other encryption tools for secure storage, and I'd like a SSH server on it for work as well as other system level *nix utilities and controls.

Then there is the whole custom ROM thing of course. Once you go there, it's difficult to go back to stock (which I learned on another device).

You can't use a wireless 360 controller without plugging in a large wired adapter. PS3 remotes are best suited for pairing to IOS and Android phones without much hassle. A wired 360 controller will work if you pick up a micro-USB adapter.


Splashtop is also not suitable for streaming desktop games. It works great for media and other remote desktop applications but for gaming there will always be unacceptable lag and unresponsive controls. No service out there can get around this, despite their claims. You'd have to step up to a Vita paired with PS4 or an Nvidia GPU and their Shield product to get a quality high end streaming experience. If you're not looking for that, just stick with emulators and mobile games designed for your device.

Once you plug that in, you plug in your hard drive to that and then you should be able to access your hard drive. I suggest using Kodi or Archos to access your video files in a Netflix like setup. There are probably other options also but I have used these two and they are good.

If you want to hook other USB things up, you need a usb hub to connect to that otg cable, then your hard drive and other things would go to the hub.

Consider buying a USB OTG cable, like this one. Then hook up a mouse and use a cursor on your phone.

Android no longer supports USB mass storage mode. It was taken out a few versions ago (before the OnePlus One came along). You can't do what you're trying to do.

However, you can:

• Install an app like ES File Explorer on your phone, and use it to copy files from your phone - over WiFi - to a shared drive on your PC.
  
  
• If you're rooted, you can install something like Samba File Sharing on your phone and use it to create a shared drive on your phone which you can then access via WiFi from your PC.
  
  
• Enable USB debugging on your phone , plug your phone into your computer, and use QtADB to copy files back and forth
  
  
• Use a USB OTG Cable to plug a flash drive into your phone and copy files onto there.
  
  

Depending on how much room you have where, you can use a right angle OTG cable, a more dongle-like adapter, or just a really long OTG cable. If you're feeling adventurous, you can also Frankenstein up your own long OTG cable.

If you have a bluetooth mouse it might be fairly easy to get working. Depending on whether or not a cursor would actually display, that is. For USB mice, something like this might be an option, but again with the same caveat.

If I had a phone with enough processing power that I didn't actually need for work, you can bet your ass I'd be reaping all that sweet, sweet, dota-phone karma for myself.

USB-OTG cables let you plug any USB peripheral into your phone. I have one for my Note 2 and I can plug in a Dualshock controller, USB flash drives, keyboard, mouse, etc.

The GameKlip is a much more elegant solution for gaming purposes however as it goes from micro USB to mini USB for the Dualshock (however for better battery life you'd really want to root your phone and connect to the dualshock over bluetooth). With the link above, you'd still need to plug in a mini usb cable. But I wanted to let you know these cables exist because they can come in handy.
