It splits the 4 pairs inside the input ethernet and uses 2 pairs for each side.
if you have cat5E, cat6 or cat6A cable you should be okay since in any of those your maximum speed should be able to reach 100 Mbps in both splits.
Currently my router is upstairs and I have 1 ethernet cable running through the floor to my desktop. I would rather not use Wi-Fi on my switch. Could I use something like this to split my cable, or would something like this be better?
Secondly for the cable should I purchase the official Nintendo connector or would this cheaper one work?

Are you sure all your equipment is gigabit capable? If you had a 100 Mbit/s port somewhere in your chain, then the most you'll get is 100 Mbit/s. Also check your cabling; gigabit requires all 4 pairs (8 wires), while 10/100 Mbit/s can get away with 2 pairs (4 wires). Ethernet splitters that let you run two cables over one cable are only giving 2 pairs (4 wires) to each cable, so you can't do gigabit if you're using them.
You can also check WAN to LAN throughput here. Search for your router specifically and see what its max throughput is.
And of course, only run speed tests over Ethernet, not over WiFi. Your local WiFi speed may be slower than your internet connection, but that's not your ISP's fault.

Okay thanks, our two seperate lines are for a main house and a mother-in-law suite. Unfortunatetly the mother-in-suite uses a life-alert system with an ethernet splitter like this one. So I don't think I'd be able to connect it directly to the modem (given that the other phone jacks wouldn't work).
I might just have to pay up and call Comcast to reconfigure the lines. Any idea how much that would cost? Seems like a simple fix right that would only take an hour?
