I believe you can also do this with a DexDrive, though your PC will need an archaic COM port. You'll also need to use something like PSXGE to convert the save after transferring. Further conversion may be required to get it into a compatible format for the PSP. I've done the reverse before (PSP->PS1) for Final Fantasy 9 saves and it seemed to work OK.
There's also a method to do this if your PS2 is soft-modded. You can basically setup the PS2 as an FTP server, then you login and copy the save file off the card. (Edit: Or just copy locally on the PS2 from the memory card to a USB flash drive) Here is a tutorial. It would be a lot of effort for it. If you can afford the DexDrive, that would probably be the best route.

No, "if you really just want the Classic". If you'd also kind of like the PS1, then it doesn't apply.

Looking around, it's pretty easy to find PS2 memory card readers meant for the PS3, and I think those might work for PS1 memory too (although I'm not positive). Some of the prices for those on Ebay look a little crazy though. This would be the really old-school answer, if you have a way to get the software off of the floppy disks, and connect something with a DB9 serial connection to your computer.
