I use ~2 m for my GSD mix and it works great! I use a horse whip though which is probably a bit easier to wield than PVC.
They are great! I've been sick recently and working a lot so it's perfect for getting some energy out without a lot of work on my part. Mine is just a lunge whip with a toy tied to the end. If you have a tack shop in your area you can get one there.
