The short answer:
You're doing it wrong. You're using the outdated causal steps approach. You should be using bootstrapping, as in Hayes' Process macro. If you read Hayes' book, you'll see that mediation does not statistically require significant direct or total effects. In fact, technically the a or b path could be insignificant, but the overall indirect effect could be significant.
