Just a quick portable/temporary install that I threw together for an upcoming road trip. Will have a more semi-permanent setup when I get time.

  • So, it's an RPi running openelec/XBMC. I used a 4GB thumb drive for the EXT-4 formatted storage, but I wanted larger storage that I could use on other (non-linux) devices, so I added a 32GB thumb drive with windows format (I can't remember if it's NTFS, FAT, or FAT32). This way, I put all my movies on the stick, but I can then use an OTG cable to plug it into my phone or my tablet. I also have a netbook running XBMCbuntu that it works in.

  • I bought a TSOP38238 infrared sensor from Adafruit and followed this tutorial to connect and program it to work with a spare remote I had laying around from a digital picture frame.

  • The 7" TFT screens are both powered from the car's 12V outlet and an RCA splitter sends composite video signal to both.

  • The RPi is powered by a Jackery Bar 5600mAh batter pack. The cool thing about this is that the Jackery Bar is in turn being powered/charged by the car, so it acts more like a UPS, so if I need to shut the car off to get gas or anything, the RPi will continue to run and won't experience catastrophic power loss when re-starting the engine, etc.

This setup works awesome. Although I won't be able to watch while I'm driving, my wife can, and so can the kids in the back. Also, the screen up front is nice so I can see what's happening when using the remote.

Hey guys, quick question. Headed to the Mets game tonight with some friends, and I don't go to Citi all that often. I was wondering if I'll be allowed to bring in my portable phone charger, because I can't take a chance on getting it taken away. Anyone have any insight? Thanks! And LGM (just for tonight, because fuck Jon Lester).

The exception to the conventional batteries is charging with a Micro-USB port and bringing a small usb battery pack or solar panel battery combo. I switched to an all usb charging setup this year and love it. All of my climbing gadgetry can be charged with one 6,000mah battery pack:

Cameras (Sony DSC-RX100M ii and GoPro),

Headlamp (ReVolt),

Water purifier (Steripen Freedom model),

iPod (audio books),

SmartPhone/SatPhone,

Satelite Beacon/PLB (DeLorme inReach SE),

GPS Watch (Suunto Ambit 2),

2 Way Radios

.

Findings (so far):

Inexpensive solar/battery was almost useless as a solar panel.

This Jockery thing put out 2.1amps and worked awesome but it sometimes shut off after 10min when charging consumption was low like on an iPod Nano. This is my sweet-spot solution of choice depending on how long I'm out.

A Goal Zero Nomad 20 panel and Sherpa 50 are awesome for base camps but pricy.

We all have extra AC->USB wall warts and laptops to charge off of too when not going on extended trips so it is nice to keep that stuff charged up without having to pull batteries out and charge them or worse, replace disposables.

Your issue might not be the external power source but ambient temperature related..

Although my experience is with the older HDR-AS200v model, ambient temperature affects the continuous usage of the camera. I was able to record over 3 hours of footage indoors using an external power source. It was over 75F on April 30 and very sunny when I tried to record continuously with an external power source as I ran outdoors. I was surprised that the camera turned off after 38 minutes. I was able to start recording again immediately but once again it stopped recording and shut off in 20 minutes, Since I had the camera strapped to my head, I couldn't see if the "heat" error message was flashing or not before it turned off.

I have had this one for over a year now, charges my S4 about 3 times. It is the size above the one OP linked.

Well very cool man. I didn't know what the rate of change for those Samsungs were.

Might I suggest instead something a bit more like this to relieve your charging issues?

I have had really great success using a battery pack backup with my phone. Lets me go days without itching for a plug (Moto X Gen 2).

Cheers!

Another option would be to just buy a battery USB charger. I got tired of messing with the AV outlets in the different LLVs that I drive so I got one of these. Even driving around delivering parcels for 9hours it has kept my phone at 100% the entire time to play podcasts etc.

This is the one I got but there are about a million options. http://www.amazon.com/Jackery%C2%AE-Bar-Premium-Aluminum-External/dp/B00AANMVNQ/ref=zg_bs_7073960011_18

I have this I love it, and it charges my phone as quick as being plugged into the wall

I have this one and its worked great for me. I've had it a couple months now, and got it at $30 although it seems to have gone up a little in price now.

Here's another option from monoprice thats a little cheaper

This one has worked very well for me: Jackery 5600mAh 2.1A 5V

u/storunner13 · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Yes, but I would not put this on your list for BIFL, or really anything other than gimmicky. The Biolite is well advertised, but that's about it.

At 33oz, it is very heavy. For the same price you can get a <6oz stainless wood-gas stove here. Not to mention the favorable exchange rate with Canada right now (~90 USD). If you need to charge a phone, get a spare battery like this one. At 5.5 oz, you have essentially the same thing as a Biolite, for the same price, at one third the weight. You can even go cheaper (at some cost expense) if you buy a Bushbuddy knockoff on Amazon.

Can you explain why gas is a hassle? It seems to me that gas is the easiest and most efficient backpacking cooking system.

This is 20 bucks and once charge, will charge your phone from dead to full, three times. They also have bigger ones which equal more charges from dead:http://www.amazon.com/Jackery-Bar-External-Battery-Charger/dp/B00AANMVNQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1450145036&sr=1-2&keywords=jackery

u/mcfarlie6996 · 1 pointr/flashlight

I wouldn't say that it compromises the quality of the light but more that it's an added feature/convenience. It might be nice for like camping but personally I have a separate phone charger which is much more pocket friendly and doesn't stand out if I'm out in public and I need to charge my phone.

I like this one enough that I’ve bought a couple over the years. It has pass through power. (No affiliation.)

Invest in a powerbank, you can find one on amazon for 10-30 dollars depending on how much juice you want. I personally would recommend Jackery since I have used them before. Bought one powerbank and its still good to go 2 years later.

This is what I have, and its small enough to fit in a pocket, and its cheap af, I could have sworn I payed more then that when I first bought it...lucky you.
