You can waste a lot of money buying tools at random; even many name brands are just shockingly poor quality, anymore.

Two questions:

  1. How much money are you looking to spend?

  2. How extensive of work are you ultimately planning on doing?

Oil changes, for example; you generally only need 1 wrench (the size of your drain plug, or just an 8-way "bone" wrench) and maybe an oil filter tool (I use the $5 oil filter pliers from Harbor Freight). To change your grill, you probably only need a screwdriver.

If that's the extent of your needs, go buy a tool bag, a set of wrenches and a couple of screwdrivers, and you're done; or, add pliers, a ratchet and a rail of sockets, etc.

If you plan on doing more, I would start with something like this:

    https://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/hand-tool-sets/301-pc-mechanics-tool-set-63464.html

With a 20% off coupon (just search for harbor freight coupon database, they'll scan it off your phone), that's $160 for a full socket set, pliers, screwdrivers, hex keys and wrenches. Not all of it is the best quality, but it's cheap enough that you can replace the poor quality stuff with better and still come out ahead of going to Lowe's or Home Depot, much less buying "good" tools.

If you have money to burn...

There is a middle ground, though.
