I use in ear buds, so it pulls double duty as a music/gps provider and ear plugs. Outside noise very quiet but can still hear the environment around me when muted or turned down quiet low.
Whether you decide if it is worth the risk for not being able to fully immerse yourself in your current situation is up to only you. Personally I don't think it has a serious impact on safety as if you were to hear an accident coming, it's probably too late to make a serious action to prevent it.
Also I've been pulled over twice with both buds in and it was ignored and the other was just a simple "You shouldn't do that but carry on".
I've tired so many earbuds. Seriously. I've spent several hundred dollars. After all is said and done I'll buy these babies allll day. JBuds J5 earbuds currently $17.43 on Amazon. Suspiciously high quality sound for this price. Inexpensive. Great look and size.
JLab does a pretty good job on durability with their [JBuds] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005VEZ58C/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_ENRBwbECXZ3J8) and they are relatively inexpensive. Metal bud portion and thick cable. I'm not sure in what way your kids are breaking their headphones, but this is just my recommendation for general toughness!

Getting 2k reviews by creating 2k accounts and ordering 2k items to 2k different location to mass spam and inflate the star rating doesn't really seem likely.

May be the product's quality dropped recently?
I'm asking for some Jlab J5's. They're not very expensive and received decent reviews.
