I have the classic Hansen edition, which has a nice wooden board with feet.

I've just been using a wooden [go board](http://www.amazon.com/Go-Game-with-Wood-Board/dp/B00000IZPL
) and some paper models. For my characters, I also just use this.

A Go board is 1 inch by 1 inch, and so are most of the paper tokens.

Chances are if you have stereotypical Asian (grand)parents, they have a go board in the attic.

My version from Amazon for 23-25 dollars. Wooden board, the pieces aren't bad at all. It's really not a bad set at all for the price http://www.amazon.com/Go-Game-with-Wood-Board/dp/B00000IZPL

Well, the bowls are light wooden, and has the right sound when you close them, and are beautiful.
The clam shell stones (white stones) are beautifully made of clams, if you hold them up to the light, you can see the clam structure (they have more detailed pictures on the site)
The slate (black stones), well, ok it is slate ... but hey, better than plastic.
And finally the board is nicely made out of new kaya (spruce) and not lacquered but oiled. Unlike a typically "club board" which could be just colored laminated wood. Even the thinnest give off a sound when you place a stone.
Also the sizes of board and stones are bigger than many "toy versions".

Define cheap? $25? $50? $75? Are you just looking for something to play on, or do you want something that feels comfortable to play on? Is it for on the go, for go clubs, or just something for home?

Shipping is a bit expensive, but the glass stones are preferred over the plastic. You can get a decent set (with shipping in the US) for $90 USD, so I can't imagine CA being much more (economy set), or they have the intrepid set for ~$70 USD. I wouldn't recommend the bento box, unless you have a board, unless this is meant to be packed and taken anywhere without fuss (even still, I'd recommend a foldable board over the cloth).

For $27 CAD, with free shipping.
I'm not a fan of this set, its tiny and the go stones are plastic. But it'll do in a pinch.

A go set usually isn't included in a collection of other games. They're usually sold by themselves.

If you're looking for a full go set instead of a go bang set, then it's really a matter of aesthetics on what you'd like. Playmat or wooden board? Actual stone or plastic pieces? Does it need nice containers for the stones? If so, separate or in the board itself?

You've got a lot of choices under $30 that will last a long time if you treat 'em right, but if you're looking for the basic barebones stuff, you can always go with this old standby.

John Hansen Co. has been selling that exact go board game kit for decades now. It sure isn't fancy but it works.

This isn't mine exactly, but my personal set kind of looks like this, plus 20 some odd years of wear & tear.

I absolutely agree, and I honestly feel like I have less of a grasp on the games digitally than I do if I can look at the real board and feel the real pieces. Still, it's better than not having opponents. I wishhh I had a great Go board like that, mine is this chinsy one.
