What do people think of the Johnston and Murphy Melton? The black is $123 on amazon and with the 20% off shoes it dips barely below $100. Good year welted too.

There's really nothing safer than a mid-grey or navy suit, both of which I'd assume are interchangeable for both the interviews themselves and the meet and greet. If you're looking for brands and don't mind shopping online, Suitsupply is a great place to start (check out their purple line for <$500). The Copenhagen, Washington and Soho are their slim fits. eHaberdasher's Benjamin sartorial suit is fully canvassed, but the shipping on mine took a very long time (~15 days) and that may not be acceptable for your needs.

In-store, check out J. Crew's Ludlow suits (on a discount), J. Crew Factory's Thompson suit (by far the cheapest option here), Brooks Brothers Madison (the most expensive), or Banana Republic's Monogram. All but Brooks cost under $500.

For shoes, Johnston & Murphy's Melton is a good cheap option, but only if you don't feel like you couldn't already swing the black oxfords you own. Brown Allen Edmonds Park Avenues are a significant step up in quality and price, but you can't go wrong with a pair of brown cap toe shoes. They'll last a very long time.

I really only wear cheap belts and don't wear ties at all, so someone else could be a lot more valuable in those areas. Best of luck!

I had a similar uniform im training for a job. If done wrong you can look like a busboy/valet. Things to focus on: belt, watch, shoes. You have to make sure your shirt and pants fit obviously.

But you can add a touch of personality with your watch and belt. Keep everything black since your shoes are black.

Black leather belt with a gold or silver face. If you get a black leather watch, make sure the metal matches your belt ( gold with gold, silver with silver). You could get black alligator or lizard watch/belt for extra pizzaz. I wore a gold pinky ring but that was personal taste , its up to you.

As for your shoes: i would go with black captoe oxfords but thats the most formal and would look better with a full suit. You could always get derbys or loafers but please please don't get any cheap, square toed, rubber soled shoes. Your shoes are the most important part. It will make or break you, but also i understand its just for work.

Make sure you keep them shined and make sure your shirt is always crisp and not wrinkled

Here are some shoe, watch, and belt recommendations. I don't know your budget so i went kinda cheap.

I bought these recently. Today is my first day wearing them and I have a good feeling about them. I have had both bad and good experiences with Johnston Murphy before and I feel like this is a good pair.

I agree with splitplug. A plainer shoe would be a better investment; they're more versatile. A nice cap-toe, balmoral, somewhat shiny black shoe would ideal. The Johnston and Murphy Melton can be had for $125 (most sizes anyway) on amazon. It's a leather soled, Goodyear welted shoe. They'll last years and are among the most quality shoes that can be bought at the price point. The next step you would be to something like AE for a few hundred, and then Alden's, etc. for a few hundred above that. Either way a Goodyear welted shoe (actually stitched on sole, not glued) is a steal for $125. I got mine recently. They haven't seen much use yet, but I've heard great things, and I'm happy with the way they feel. I hope this helps. I really recommend them. They're a good investment.

Johnston and Murphy Melton is $124.99 for the black version. If you sign up and use the 20% off Amazon coupon, it's almost within your price range.

I'm looking for dress shoes for law school orientation and future interviews and formal events. Budget is around ~200. Thoughts on these for the price?
