I also enjoy making custom polymer pieces for games (e.g., custom branches for Morels, homemade expansions for Viticulture, etc). That's probably my favorite way to add to our games and anyone can do it for cheap and easy! MeepleSource and Stonemaier games also have a lot of 'upgrade resource kits', though MeepleSource does theirs in wood while Stonemaier does actual pieces out of metals and resins.

Yahtzee played poker-style (aka Liar's Dice type games) is a good choice because it offers multiple phases in which players can raise or fold, is accessible, and easy to play in short bursts. You can even do it like Hold 'Em (aka Yahtzee Challenge/"common hand" Liar's Dice) where the "dealer" rolls the initial 5 dice and everyone has to play off of the same initial "hand". You can play it "heads up" like Yahtzee or with hidden "hands" like Liar's Dice.

If you wanna get really into it you can even pick up some blank dice and paint on your own glyphs or whatever to stand in for 1-6. Someone left some "poker dice" at my house once which is what gave me the idea...you can just reskin all the face cards to make your own custom sci fi version with the same rules. At most you'd just have to have a little handout with the various "hands" and their rankings.
