I haven't tried this but I've heard of people attaching this small carbon filter in-line with their sawyer
I like what you did there, but the katadyn carbon filter is refilable and connects to the mini with the rubber tube that comes with the mini. It costs around $20.

in the summer, 50 miles is a lot of drinking water. i would study your area for water sources that dont assume infrastructure is still up (electricity, running water from the tap). pretty much any body of water in LA is not something i would want to drink. i wouldnt want to drink the tap water there either for that matter. so get a good filter, i like the sawyer point one for biological stuff, then a katadyn carbon cartridge https://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-8013450-Carbon-Cartridge/dp/B0007U0184/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484442429&sr=8-1&keywords=katadyn+carbon if you are on a budget. im sure there are much more expensive filters that filter chemicals, but i think its sufficient for a few days.
