Yes, it does take more time to manage, that's true. And lots of rewriting too! Backups aren't really reasonable either. I like to point out that people need to practice GTD long-term, and get better at it slowly, same as any other skill. And for practicing GTD, nothing beats paper.

One exception: a small paper notebook in your pocket is a faster capture device than anything we currently have digitally, and I still use that for capture, even with a digital GTD implementation. I slide a small pen in the spine, and I cut the covers of 4.5"x3.25" mini composition books (these guys: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003I869CO/), so they fit in there nicely.
