my wife had the same issue. She ended up getting an Electro Fan. Its basically just a speaker with fan noises. She loves it. Me? I hate it. I hated the fan. I always slept in absolute silence. We also got one for our 4 year olds room (When he was about 2). I use this machine to go to bed. I stopped using the fan because my nose always stuffed up and my eyes ended up really dry in the morning.

LectroFan. It's got white noise settings and fan settings. The fan settings sound so real it's scary. There's like 10 different ones too, like box fan, extractor fan, industrial fan, it's crazy.

Get a white noise machine. Smaller and way more convenient.

Kinda off-topic but have you tried using a white noise machine? A really good one should drown out ambient sounds and have non-repeating white noise patterns that won't distract you. I've used the LectroFan over the past year and I sleep a lot better with it on.

We also sleep with brown noise in our room so we don’t hear baby crying from her room during our cry it out periods. We started CIO at 7 mos.

Honestly I would be really careful in the early weeks to not use them unless you are not handling baby. I would be scared about falling asleep in an unsafe position.

My baby had severe reflux (had to be medicated) and had insane “colic”....likely later known to be missed sleeping cues....and I never felt the need to muffle the crying.

My husband and I have had this one for close to a year. It's surprisingly tiny, but gets really loud. We don't usually have the volume all the way up. It's nice because you can easily adjust the tone and type of sound. It also (unlike many sound machines) doesn't run on a loop, so I've never experienced the weird thing with some sound machines where you start repeating noises, which drives me bananas.

OKAY so I went through this and was deemed the "mother shusher" lol. A few things that helped me:

-Make being quiet a GAME for older kid. I did this by "playing" ninjas. Who can be the quietest and sneakiest? I always win! You have to get better! (spoiler alert! He got better and is the best ninja in the house).

-INVEST IN A WHITE NOISE MACHINE IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE. I spent $$$ on this one because it has various types of sounds and can be played LOUD. You have to have it louder than you think. It drowns out ALL NOISE I SWEAR IT. LO sleeps like a dream and even sort of pavlov'd him because I turn it on and he knows its sleep time.

-If possible keep older son on opposite ends of the house. The baby is upstairs with his white noise machine and older son is downstairs while baby is napping.

Also a dedicated sound machine (this one is amazing), not your phone. Honestly, optimally two, even if only one has adjustable white noise and volume with the other being a box fan. The sound machine by your head, the other on the opposite side of the bed and possibly even nearer to your feet (depends on the room).

Using a phone is cool and it worked for me for awhile but it usually takes away from being able to have white noise and optional music and an alarm without either draining the battery or overcharging it all night.

This has been a lifesaver.

My roommate tosses and turns pretty much all night and the noise of her bed frame creaking would pull me out of even the deepest sleep. (Dont even get me started on when she would have her boyfriend over!!!)

Honestly, I love the thing, and usually it tunes most things out. But the creaking is so incredibly loud at night that I'd have to blast the white noise generator to drown out the creaking, and then people would issue noise complaints about me.

We use these. We have one in every bedroom in the house.
