He's one of the best things in MMA right now. Officiating is not always done very well but he is consistently the best at knowing when to stop fights. If you've read John McCarthy's book (which I highly recommend if you skip a lot of the personal stuff) you'll better appreciate how hard of a job Herb Dean has and how well he does it.

big john refused to ref again unless they gave him the power to stop fights. His book is a fantastic read if you like behind the scenes info from the early days, BJM was spearheading regulation talks, came up with the early rules, almost fought tank abbott after he mouthed off to BJM's wife, etc... i couldn't put it down and finished it in one day.

used copies for $4 on amazon i found a copy at my local library suprisingly enough. lesnar's book too, good stuff in the martial arts section sometimes.

He talks about it a fair bit in his book. It's a good read and interesting perspective on the early days of MMA.
