The Ace 2 is pretty good for ~$200, but here are some alternatives in the price range that you might like more:

Sony Xperia U: Same price, better build quality, and better performance across the board. This upgrade is pretty much a no-brainer.

LG Optimus L9: Same price again, but you'll need to buy a MicroSD card to get the most out of this device (half of its internal memory is taken up by T-Mobile bloatware). The camera isn't particularly impressive, but the battery life and build quality are best in class.

Nokia Lumia 620: If you're willing to consider a Windows 8 phone, this is probably the most well-rounded and well-built device in this price range. It's seriously the nicest low-end phone I've ever held. The biggest drawback is the fact that it is a Windows 8 phone, really.

$200 total with no subsidies will get you a smartphone from late 2011 to early 2012. Your best bet would be a used Galaxy S2, HTC Amaze, HTC One S, HTC Sensation, or Optimus L9, which are all 4.3" or larger. You may also find a Nexus 4 in the high $200s.

Anything newer still carries a significant premium. As you've seen, you can expect a Galaxy S3 around $300 to $350, and a Note 2 around $400 to $450.

Swappa used for all prices.

Edit: Amazon has the L9 new for under $200.

also not sure if you have a target nearby, but they have a 30 day return policy for mobile devices and they price match Amazon. Options L9 for $179 from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AKG2XSQ

  • Please note one of the reviewers biggest problems with the phone was no Jellybean but the phone has since been updated to jellybean so that's one major gripe out of the way.

Blu Phones are rebranded Chinese phones and so I'm extremely hesitant to recommend them.

Sorry I didn't answer your question but I don't want to recommend a phone I myself wouldn't use.

I have Ptel with an old T-Mobile phone that was given to me. I pay 5 cents a minute.

There is a sale on a prepaid T-Mobile LG Optimus L9 for ~$180 with no tax from several stores online.

You could get that and the T-Mobile $50 unlimited talk, text and web prepaid plan and you'd be set.
