I bought this one all with Perk money and I couldn't be happier (I run 2 laptops, one desktop, 4 personal phones, 2 perk phones and one tablet - I live in a 2-story home): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L4HWY3E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Is the router that I've been using. I bought it specifically for the same reason you're talking about. It's been very good so far. It is limited to N type devices, but I know that the Hydros and the ZTE's are all N type so it's not a huge deal.

What interested me about the router is that it's got Gigabit Ethernet and 300/450 Mbps wireless, which other routers with the same technology were costing in the 80-100 dollar range. This refurbished router is pretty powerful for $35.

I would recommend cisco/linksys over tp link, but thats because i havent used a tp link router before. Heres what I'm about to buy.

Ok. Thanks for the input. Have you had any experience with some of the cheaper dual-band routers such as the TP-LINK TL-WDR3500 or Linksys EA3500?

What's your budget?

Linksys $35.00

yup that's right, you need your own router. modem is a one to one device only.

if you are on a budget get this http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-EA3500-Dual-Band-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B00L4HWY3E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416960787&sr=8-1&keywords=gigabit+router

so what's the question?

Thanks for the info. I never really thought of routers in terms of processor speed and RAM. But I guess these factors contribute towards the performance. I'm a power user and do online gaming and lots of video streaming apart from the usual low key activities so you can call me an 'Active' user.

I stumbled across this gem on amazon yesterday. What do you think. A dual-band+Gigabit port router for $35 has to be steal of the year IMO. I guess I'm really falling for this one.

This one has a USB port so you can plug in an external drive and use it as a NAS.
