Multi-level cascades are an interesting approach a colleague and me are trying out in robot arms and mobile robots. Comes from a fairly unknown theory about how nervous systems work. Basically, it is stacking P, and PD loops with multiple inputs and outputs on top of each other, where outputs from top ones serve as variable setpoints for lower level loops. At the same time, inputs from lower ones are combined to form inputs for higher ones. As you get higher in the cascade, you control more abstract variables.

There are some great examples in this book: http://www.amazon.com/Living-Control-Systems-III-Fact/dp/0964712180

It comes with a CD with source code and explanations, but the CD is also available for free, here: http://www.billpct.org/ . For example, there is a simulation of an arm with 14 degrees of freedom that doesn't use traditional inverse kinematics for 3D positioning, but the mentioned cascades. Much less computationally expensive.

Possibly https://www.amazon.com/Living-Control-Systems-III-Fact/dp/0964712180 and Behavior:Control of Perception from the same author. I'm coming from a psychology background, and these were quite useful.
