I wouldn't recommend getting USB or surround sound headphones. They come in two types and both are mediocre as well as limiting. You have your headphones with multiple drivers, which reviews will time and time again say are off. Multiple smaller drivers in a circumaural headset next to year ear? Diminished sound quality as well as limited directional accuracy. The other option is to get a set that use virtual surround, but these are going to be USB only. My experienec with USB headphones tells me this is not worth it. Needing to install drivers, potential voltage dropouts from USB charge not being stable, popping (that shit HURTS and is what caused me to throw out my last USB headset), as well as not being able to plug it into more devices. The 3.5 millimeter standard is MUCH better to have here for its versatility and simplicity. If you would like USB, as another user suggested a functional reason for it (though the same could be achieved by using the front audio ports because most computers will still distinguish between headphones and speakers if you use the front ports), they do sell cheap USB adapters that often have their own virtual surround drivers. I'd recommend this over a dedicated USB headset. The lack of versatility and problems associated are worth keeping your setup modular. If you would like to have virtual surround but your soundcard/motherboard doesn't have driver support for it, then I really suggest grabbing the Razer Surround drivers for free.

Okay, wall of text is over! What SHOULD you buy? That's a crazy question. If you're looking for a headset (headphone+microphone), I'm personally a fan of the Logitech G230 which is one of the better price/performance options out there. They are not the highest quality headphones but they are sturdy (important!) and comfortable (double important!). The sound quality coming through them is more than passable. Sometimes I forget I'm not listening to speakers, even though I've been using them exclusively for months. The mic quality is mediocre and requires some boosting, so that should be known.

If you're just looking for headphones without a microphone, this is NOT the place to be asking that question. Audiophiles know headphone gear much better than gamers do, but generally don't know anything about headsets because the low-quality mics headsets use aren't of much use to audiophiles.

If you got through all that, congratulations and I hope it helps you! Just make sure to check reviews on various sites (or just Amazon, if you're lazy like me) and don't pick up anything with less than a 4/5 rating. Good luck!

It's a Logitech G230 headset. I used to have a pair. They're excellent for the price, especially with the mic it has on it.

This one's mainly for the laughs. Also, maybe rant a bit and tell gaming companies how to design proper headsets.

EDIT: Added prices in bold. Also, instead of "everything is the best", how about we start getting some material for "which headphones are the worst? THEEEESE!"

Logitech g230 go for $40 new on Amazon. They go for $26 used on Amazon. Ebay is in the $20 area.

Unless your really want the blue, I'd recommend the G230s. They are exactly the same as the 430s but the 430s come with a sound card that is next to useless.

I got the Logitech G430 and it is great for me. I was going to suggest the G230 if the 430 was too much, but...well...it costs more right now trough Amazon...The 430 comes with a USB adapter to plug in the headphone and mic plugs, it is 7.1, and I like it quite a bit.

I use this one: Logitech G230 Stereo Gaming Headset – On-Cable Controls – Surround Sound Audio – Sports-Performance Ear Pads – Rotating Ear Cups – Light Weight Design https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BFOEY4I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_huuOBb9ZGH7YQ

I find it very comfortable and the volume control sufficient for my needs. I got a USB adapter so I can more easily plug it in, but with a different adapter I think it might be able to work with console, but I’m not sure on that.

This is what I have and I absolutely love it. Originally I really didn't like the shape, but then I read that it is shaped to fit your ears. But seriously it is, it's so comfortable. Even my boyfriend who is in love with Razer products admitted it was better than his.

I tend towards the more expensive units for better or worse, but my experiences with various Plantronics Gamecom series headsets have been quite positive. I really liked the Gamecom 780 I borrowed once and I'll bet the sub-$50 Gamecom 377 or 380 is worth it. Probably not the sure advice you want, but that's all I've got.

Additional options for consideration:

In my experience, Razer headsets look the best, but are much tighter on the head than others and generally sound over-bassy.

Logitech tends to have the most features and pretty decent sound, but are often finicky, especially with the microphone.

Budget: $50 (No more!)

Source: Plugging into a laptop...

Isolation: Don't really care. Used mainly at home...

Preferred Type of Headphone: Full-sized with microphone (Those guides don't give me ANY good microphones, except the $40 ones. I just want a good and cheap headset).

Preferred Tonal Balance: Not really sure about this. I'll stick with balanced, since I'm not spoiled in sounds

Past headphones: Used These in the past. broke after 6 months.

Preferred Music: Doesn't really matter. I just want a non-tin kind of sound. I HATE sounding like it's in a tin can.

Are you looking to spend $40 USD or $40 CAD? Because $40 CAD won't get you anything worth buying.

The i5 should be alright with the 970, though it's definitely on the verge of bottlenecking.

I have this pair, and I got a great deal on it. It works really well, and is designed for PC, since it has dual 3-pole plugs. You would need to get a dual 3-pole to single 4-pole adapter for X1 and PS4, but it works really well for me. Hope that helps.

Looking for a new pair of headphones as my last ones are kaput

  • Budget: Under $50 USD
  • Source: Desktop PC
  • Requirements for Isolation: preferred but not absolutely needed
  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public?: I don't plan on using it in public.
  • Preferred Type of Headphone: Closed over ear on the larger side, Wired or Wireless is fine.
  • Preferred tonal balance: More towards base but overall balanced.
  • Past headphones: JVC HARX500, VersionTech G2000 and Logitech G230
  • What I didn't Like about past headphones: The In line controls would cause problems relatively soon into their lifespan
  • Preferred Music: I listen to metal the most but listen to all types of music, here a few examples of songs I like - Korn - Right now, Nine Lashes - Anthem of the Lonely, lil Jon - Get Low, Thousand Foot Krutch - Wars of Change & Coldplay - Something Just Like This
  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up: Volume control, Not in line control but on the headphones themselves(In line controls is what usually fails in my experience.)

I spend a lot of time Watching Movies & playing games and would like better surround experience if possible.

My head is on the larger side so Tight fits are somewhat uncomfortable.

I prefer microphones to be separate so no mic is needed for this one.

Hmm okay.

Let's do a little test. I picked the hottest Apple Mac

Well but the default combination sucks, so let's get it at least on par with my old laptop.

As you can see a stronger Processor by 0.4 Ghz. Costs 150$

Memory 8 GB + 100$

Hard Drive 1Tb + 50$

Thunderbolt display, mutually exclusive to apple, and if you are tired of the thundering 13 inch monitor + 1000$

Oh, awesome programs. First is some sort of help center, boring. Oh the second. The totally free itunes, now you can use on your computer, with only + 99$ extra.

Oh accesories

The VGA adapter, great. Oh finally, if I want to conect to any standard display in the word, I need to get anotehr 30 bucks. Well, luckily I have the thunderbolt display, So I take only HDMI

  • 34,95$

Plus a copy of the latest windows because we will use that in the benchmarking. 138.94$

Which is, 2521.89$ For a state of the art, little older, but stil cool laptop. Let's look how normal laptos will fare

Hell, let's take my old laptop, So I would be fair on the dated hardware of apple.

Oh lucky me, it's exactly in the combination that I have, and what I just made on the apple site. It's almost as if I knew.

2.6 Ghz processor, hmm older generation, but still strangely stronger than the i7.

Display with 17.3 inches as opposed to 13.

Graphics intel Hd, 4600 with... Oh wait a minute, did Apple even let me pick a graphics card? Well I hope it has a graphics card.

Memory 8 gigs, same as apple. With the mall price of 39.46$. Yeah apple must be generous.

HDD 1 Tb with the mall price of 69.92$

Network card with ..... Oh wait a minute, does the apple even has a wifi? I sure hope so, because it's not specified in the specs.

These ports: 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0, audio combo jack, micro-HDMI, 2-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC), VGA, LAN

As opposed that one apple USB. And other stuff that Apple doesn't have.

Oh I forgot the Monitor. Let's include one right now. I'm gamer, So I absolutely need 4K, wouldn't you aggree ?

So to calculate the final price 649$ + $579.99

Oh wait, I forgot other gamer stuff. Like Headset

    +42.28$

    Mouse

    17$

Yo Dawg, I heard an Oculus rift is cool. But I already have a monitor. Doesn't matter.

  • 350$

And finally let's have a little treat

    +50$

    Final price 1688.27$

Hmmm. Hardware is practically the same, which should actually give the edge to Apple. We are running windows so there are no bullshit software shenanigans. So both machines will run it at approximately the same efficiency. Apple should actually run things better thanks to the 13 inch display, if I don't use monitor. But apple machine lacks ports, so you need extra USB, and hope it has standartized Audio. With lenovo you have 1 year guarantee and other nice stuff.

And wow, look on what the extra stuff I got when I went with Lenovo laptop of the same power level. Let me calculate what that woud cost you with the MAC.

2981.17(+ the price of extra USB accesories) vs 1688.27

Now I'm not a genius. But this seems a pretty fucking obvious to me. I was as fair as possible and absolutely transparent. Basically identical specs (forgetting the graphics card apple doesn't have listed, and the audio, and the network card and other stuff that Mac either lacks, or doesn't have listed.

And just Fyi. For the price of the Mac, even in default settings. I can build a proper PC that could literally outperform every MAC.... put together

Soooo, what is your excuse ?

    >Simply untrue. Having run bench mark tests on Windows running on both an asus laptop at $1099, and a macbook pro at the same price point

    Yeh, right

    > ran at a two points higher windows experience index

Windows experience index? You will have more luck listening to 4chan trinity thread regarding IT advices.

    >A processor is more then a ghz, it's more then a "how many cores this thing got?

A car is more than engine and more than the horse power, and gass consumption. It has to have a nice body too. (That is the allegory to this situation unless I wasn't clear)

    > It's transistors, it's turbo boost, it's how the software uses it

Yeah because God knows you can't do that with every PC ever made since 1998. And the software for windows is all but non-existent (sarcasm)

    >A $500 Dell will not out perform a macboo

Oh God your right. A 500$ can't indeed outperform a 2521.89$ Macbook. But turns out a 546$ can.

    >ll will not out perform a macbook, as much as you dream it so the practical answer is that is so unrealistic naive

I guess I like to dream a naive dreams.

    >And your pompous is palpable over the apple watch, I love "IT guys" who never look into something and then act like they know everything about it.

As opposed to watching random internet guys who knows literally everything about computers?

I'm actually IT guy, are you IT too ?

Most computers have a really bad, cheap internal sound car (unless you put a better one in yourself). I do not recommend using a 3.5mm microphone if you want good quality. That being said, maybe look at the Logitech G230 which is a pretty good and inexpensive headset. Then save the extra money for upgrading your PC or somethign down the road.

Otherwise, USB Hubs are fairly inexpensive if you want to go with a USB mic but don't have another slot.

Logitech G230. They're cheap and they sound amazing. They're also very comfortable. Seriously. I use the Logitech G230, I've had it for a while now and it's got a nice mic and sound quality for the price.

After lots of looking, I just bought a Logitech G230 with the standard Mic and Headset 3.5s. Love it more than any of the more expensive USB ones I've had.

u/Dalarrus · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Cheap means different things to different people.

A tangible number would help greatly, if you're stuck with 20$, I'd go with these Tek Republic cans if you've got 35$, I'd go with the logitech G230s, if you're willing to spend 55$, I'd grab the Corsair Voids

You could also go look on /r/buildapcsales to see if there's any good headphones on sale.

tl;dr looking for lightweight surround sound headphones for pc gaming

I currently have Logitech G230 headphones, problem is the audio quality feels lacking, in games its hard to tell which direction sound came from. Despite amazon advertising them having surround I dont believe they do have that feature.

  • Budget, ~$100-150
  • For desktop PC, gaming
  • The soft cloth earpads my G230's have feel great and dont cause sweating unlike many other type of pads I have had previously
  • Lightweight (willing to raise budget for this)
  • Surround sound
  • The mic sound quality needs to be acceptable or not included in which case I will invest in separate mic

I reside in EU, but will order from other side of the world if I have to. Help much appreciated!

I would absolutely not go for a "surround sound" headset. Two earcups are two earcups. "Surround" is just a software simulation in headphones. Getting a solid set of stereo headphones/a headset is the route I would take. Logitech makes great stereo gaming headsets for cheap or if you want to spend more I'd get great headphones and a modmic.

The g230 headset is %50 off (only 1 left now) [Now its %27 off and 8 in stock] and although its not on the gold box page but it says "Gold Box Deal of the Day: Up to 50% Off Select Logitech PC Gaming Products"

Also the G502 mouse says the same but doesn't appear to be on sale (anymore?).

I use a Logitech F540 I got from a Dented Box deal some years ago (maybe 2 now). The battery died and I replaced it (quick fix) for 11 USD. I paid 89 for the headset and it has been amazing.

That said the cost for this set seems to be a bit high so I dug around looking for some good deals on gaming headsets, assuming you wanted to buy them all new.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G230-Stereo-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00BFOEY4I/ - The G230 seems to have decent reviews at about 45.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Surround-Gaming-Headset-Technology/dp/B00CQ35C1Q/ - The G430 seems to also be a decently reviewed set for 67.

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PC-310-Gaming-Headset/dp/B0087ZMATE/ - These brands seem to be suggested a lot. Decent reviews for ~41.

http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Diablo-III-Gaming-Headset/dp/B005L38SGY/ - Here is a Diablo branded Steelseries headset, good brand good reviews for 62.

There can be some money saved going used and for example on the Steelseries set Amazon Warehouse Deals sells a set for 47.85 with free shipping and "Minor Cosmetic Damage". If AWD is anything like Logitech their "minor cosmetic damage" is mostly the box.

Hope I wasn't too late and these links can get you moving somewhere.

I use this one from Logitech. It is comfortable enough for long hours of playing and it is a good quality for the price. Everyone will tell you not to get a headset because the sound isn't as good as a set of really good headphones, and they are right, but if all you want to do is be able to hear everything that is going on in game and have a good mic for talking to your team. Get this.

u/ExKage · 1 pointr/ffxiv

I'm guessing you're looking for some that are just over $19.99? I didn't look too hard but this $39 one has the promo offer.

u/ReallyObvious · 1 pointr/buildapc

Bought a Logitech G230 about a month ago. I hate it. It is by far the most uncomfortable thing I have put on my head ever, and I have had my share of cheap headphones. Awful. Also the unique "breathable" earcups get dirty really fast.

I regret buying it. It has good quality sound and a great mic though.

u/MikeyJayRaymond · 1 pointr/buildapc

Personally I do not. I've only recently gotten back into PC gaming more often on WoW and have been looking at keyboards and mouses (Which are a bit higher in price than you mentioned) for 7 hours..

I mean, I've heard it's absolutely great for the price.

I came across these: Logitech G230 Stereo Gaming Headset

Headset: not really into this but id reccomend some surround sound headphones and comfy ones
I have a turtle beach headset that i used to use for my faze clan gaming days but i was too g0d and got quickescoped one day and i cried. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G230-Stereo-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00BFOEY4I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1410637645&sr=8-3&keywords=headset something like this headset should be good.

u/MystifiedMustard · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I use the Logitech g230, they're a really good pair of headphones for the price.

I recently just bought these http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G230-Stereo-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00BFOEY4I and they seem to work excellent. Although the mic isn't detachable it folds up and has a mute switch.

u/jugzeh · 1 pointr/PUBATTLEGROUNDS

Sorry I meant to paste a link. Logitech G230

u/razer981 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

These Logitech G230 are pretty good, and they're only about $1 over your $30 budget.

u/ShadowShine57 · 0 pointsr/headphones

Is there any headphones by logitech that are like the g230 but without a mic?

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G230-Stereo-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00BFOEY4I

The headphones themselves look perfect, but I don't need a mic so I don't want to pay for one.

u/Supahvaporeon · 0 pointsr/PUBATTLEGROUNDS

I have a Logitech g430, but any over ear headphones with surround sound work the best.

u/Duryn · 0 pointsr/buildapc

I don't know how it compares to other headsets, but I picked up a Logitech G230 for about $30 bucks at Best Buy. The sound quality is good and the mic works well (my brother thought I was muted when I didn't talk for a while). They are also pretty comfortable, they cover your entire ear and the padding on the top lets you wear them for a long time. The cable is really long, which is a nice feature for me, I hate headphones with a short cable. I would recommend it.
