Logitech Rumblepad 2 has been the best controller I've ever used for PC. You also might want to try a wired XBOX 360 controller.

A 3b+ (or even a 2) will play PS1 games just fine, as long as you're not using a GL plugin to render the visuals at a higher resolution. I'd rather have my PS1 games looking "stock" than using some ridiculous upscaling anyway, myself...

GameCube, though, is a different story. And also, N64 games tend to take more power than PS1; a Pi will run quite a few N64 games well enough to be playable, but it's a bit hit-or-miss as far as framerate goes. Probably best to use a more powerful computer anyway, /u/CommonGap.

As far as controllers go, it might be better to just use a wired 360 controller for everything; it plugs into USB, so no need for adapters, its face buttons are laid out very similarly to the SNES, it has joysticks so it'll work fine for PS1 and PS2 (if your system is powerful enough to run PCSX2), the right stick can be mapped to the N64's C buttons similar to the C-stick on the GameCube, etc. Alternatively, there are some great Logitech pads available for fairly cheap online; I've never had any problems with my Rumblepad 2 or Gamepad F310. Or you could get one of these adapters to take advantage of a PS1/PS2 controller's superior d-pad...

To start things off, what doesn't work:

  • The X-Box 360 controller does not work with these games. It is not entirely supported. The triggers are not recognized properly, and there are issues with the right stick.

What seems to work (But can we get some confirmation from /r/gaming?):

  • Logitech controllers set to DirectInput mode (i.e., Logitech F310), or older controllers that have compatible input modes by default (e.g., the Rumblepad 2?)

  • Playstation 2 controllers connected via a USB adapter.

This pad has served me well for years.
While it's discontinued online, causing the prices to go up -- you can still find it in stores for twenty dollars or less.

Alternatively, you can use their newer model which has better thumbsticks.

Comes in wireless flavors, too!

The 360 pad is also great, but the controls for this game are clearly optimized for a PS3-esque layout. With the attacks being mapped to the shoulder buttons.

I've used Project64 for years now. It is a fantastic emulator. Some times, though, you'll need to enable certain options in the Video/Sound/Emulation dialogs to get certain games to work.

I have 2 of these controllers. They've worked fantastically for me. I'm sure four would work great, too.

I've seen this problem with the old "Rumblepad" gamepads - the ones with buttons 1-2-3-4 instead of a-b-x-y.

I recommend a gamepad like this or this, makes things MUCH easier.

I for one still use my old and trusty Logitech RumblePad 2 on my Mac.

As for the rest, I'm sure people who've played on consoles/handhelds prefer to use gamepads on their computers whenever they can.

I just wish more newer games would support my Microsoft Sidewiner Force Feedback joystick. Playing MechWarrior on that will forever remain one of my most pleasant gaming memories.

Logitech makes pretty good controllers. I bought this one a while ago, because it was the best looking controller at Best Buy. I actually don't like it too much, because the analog sticks are housed in a square casing for whatever odd reason, and the d-pad is a full circle instead of being 4 independent buttons. But every single year, I pull that thing out and it still works perfectly. I want it to just break, but it refuses to.

If you do decide to go the Logitech route, then I would avoid the controller I bought and get one like this. That one still has the full circle d-pad, but at least the analog sticks won't get stuck in corners.

Also, one thing to note, I haven't tried that controller in Steam. It works fine with emulators and this one native racing game I tried playing once.

It is also worth mentioning that the PS3 controller is superior to the Logitech. But if you don't consider yourself a hardcore gamer, then Logitech will save you a little bit of money.

I use, a Logitech RumblePad 2 for pretty much everything.

I've had it for maybe ~6 years now and it's never failed me.

It's $25 there on Amazon, but you can find a used, working one on Ebay for $10. They even have wireless ones.

I also have this particular USB SNES controller from Retrolink and it works well enough!
