Cardboard is ok to see if you even like VR, but Amazon sells really cheap headsets of much better quality that are more comfy.

I got these recently and they're much better and more comfy.

What phone do you suggest? Need to be gyro, at least 1080p for vr. i could go HTC one m8 which has gyro and 1080p screen but limited storage. I have this headset: https://www.amazon.com/Glasses-Magicoo-Virtual-Cardboard-smartphones/dp/B016ULRGPE/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1473306708&sr=8-8&keywords=google+cardboard
I can vents on the back if it would work.

I understand about the SteelSeries; I can live with the drawbacks. For what I can find it's the only one small enough that carrying it around won't be too ridiculous. My interest here is relatively casual.

I'm looking forward to your opinion on the set you have coming. Please update us here if you think highly of it.

Edit: Possibly this one http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B016ULRGPE/ ? It has a button mechanism.

I thought they were all the same at that price - derivatives of the basic Google Cardboard V2 design. But I've been happily amazed by the Magicoo, a hard-shell with a headstrap, button, good light blocking, reasonable padding, and a removable view-through window for AR. It looks like a Star Wars stormtrooper training accessory.

I suggest waiting for Daydream or something because from my personal experience all the other headsets are just Google Cardboard lenses with a strap on the back. I personally use the Google Cardboard for developing purposes only, but my friend has this headset and he really enjoyed it.
