Personally, when I run late at night and in areas I don't know well, I carry what I affectionately call the Cougar Basher. I live in an area where mountain lions aren't terribly uncommon. Yes, I know that it wouldn't do much against a cougar, but it lights up the place nicely and it has a nice heft that is still easy to swing.
Also, I have a small pepper spray if I don't want to be encumbered. Both help me to feel safer around unknown neighborhoods.

Well, I recently found out that I'm not allowed to carry on Military bases, and the town I drive in, roughly 60% of pax are military going to or off base. Dude, invest in one of these. Rest the shaft on your shoulder like a cop, the pizza in your other hand.
You know why cops carry those? If you get in trouble, you can shine it into the assailant's eyes, blinding them, and then swing those 4 D batteries wrapped in an indestructible aluminum tube down onto their skull.
Keep it on the passenger's seat when you deliver, and you can shine it on house numbers from the road, too.
I never got robbed, but I did have to protect myself from a pitbull with one once.
