Yeah I bought New Magnector X2 Improved High Performance Sony Xperia Z3 & Z1 ... http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q3GK3YI/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_Ulfcvb013SNSR and after some time it pulled my magnetic connector out. I had to snap it back in. Haven't used it since.

I just ordered one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magnector-Improved-Performance-Magnetic-Charging/dp/B00Q3GK3YI

It says it supports speed charging but the main reason I want it is so that I don't have to open the fiddly little door all the time.

I use this magnetic charging adapter: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q3GK3YI/ref=twister_B00KQSYRJG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 (specifically the more square shaped one for $14.95). I've heard that the magnet is so strong that it rips out the charging port, but I have actually had the opposite experience. It's weak enough that it disconnects a little too easily. Not a problem for me since I was worried about damaging the port, so I'm happy. I wonder if the more oblong-shaped ones that are cheaper are the ones that were too strong?

I use this case; the clear one is frosted so it lets a bit of the color show through but not a really loud color: http://www.amazon.com/Cruzerlite-Bugdroid-Circuit-Xperia-Compact/dp/B00NQPPMPY/ref=sr_1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1457804247&sr=1-4&keywords=bugdroid+z3+compact (edit: it covers the USB flap, but I actually prefer that because it keeps my flap from popping open and I magnetically charge anyway)

As for firmware, use this guide to root without unlocking the bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/how-to-root-backup-drm-keys-t3013343 - you can also use Kingroot if you don't want to do all that, but people on XDA are a bit wary of Kingroot.

I tried out Concept (http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/sonys-android-concept-marshmallow-t3229536) but ultimately went back to Lollipop so I can have root. I use Slim ROM 4.9: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/development/d5803-23-2-1-62-slim-t3127115

Not sure why you're being downvoted... Anyways, I have this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00N2KDO30

And it is completely useless. Tedious to attach and falls off if you even shift the phone.

I have this one on the way: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00Q3GK3YI/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?qid=1420855707&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

And I am really hoping it is better. Magnetic charging is potentially one of this phones best features and I'm not sure why it doesn't come with a magnetic charger by default.

I'm still not sure which I prefer. I had the Nexus 4 for the last two years, so I have a couple wireless chargers already and really liked their ease of use. I had even mostly made my own DIY charging dock with some Qi circuits that I got on ebay, so I was rather bummed that Sony didn't use the Qi charger. But I liked the Z3 enough that I still took the plunge.

My biggest gripe about the magnetic chargers is like you said, you really have to find a good one. Out of 4 that I've purchased, only 1 is really worth a damn. I found the Magnector X to be the best connector I've come across, although it has to be the cable, not the adapter. The adapter was fine until I put a case on my phone, and now it doesn't fit. I also got a few cheapo Chinese cables that were not worth the $2-3 that I paid. Magnector X has a new adapter that looks to have fixed the clearance issue with cases, but I haven't tried it out.
