Get a copy of the maine atlas and gazetteer. It has a lot of points of interest and campgrounds of different types (developed, primitive, lean-to, etc.). It also has most of the larger trails in the state and info about where the gates are, impasses, etc. Camping locations are everywhere, though i usually find a nice secluded spot on the map away from any marked points of interest or developed camp grounds and drive in, find a spot and set up. More times than not, i'll end up in a great spot and not see another person the whole trip.

There's the Woodlawn Museum in nearby Ellsworth. They have walking trails, and a farmers market (in the winter it's inside a barn-type room). Obvs the trails are more for fair weather.

There is the Bagaduce music lending library. The largest repository of sheet music around. They have a sale room in the downstairs.

Birdsacre Sanctuary in Ellsworth:

The Stonington Opera House, on Deer Isle/Stonington (warning: there is a bridge, in case you don't like bridges, but the drive there from Blue Hill is really picturesque):

Also there are shops in Stonington.

Downtown Ellsworth has lots of cool shops and some good restaurants. There's a popular lunch place called 86 This, which does burritos and wraps.

A little further out, 8 miles from Ellsworth, in Hancock, is the Tidal Falls preserve. It's usually pretty quiet there, and the reversing falls are pretty cool:

If you keep going, you will enter the Schoodic Scenic Byway. Bring drinks and snacks, and fill up the car, not too much between there and Schoodic, until you get to Winter Harbor.

There's also some cool bars in Bar Harbor, someone local to that area would be better informed, can't remember the name of the one we used to go to, but did take a tour of Atlantic Brewery, on the way to downtown Bar Harbor. Make sure to try the blueberry beer:

It's pretty small, so the tour isn't that long, and there is a place next door that does some type of BBQ (not sure if they do it in the winter, of course).

There's Finn's Irish Pub in Ellsworth, and looks like Amherst Brewing opened up a British-themed pub this past summer:

Pretty sure there are trails in Blue Hill, and of course, Acadia National Park. If you have GPS, try exploring some of the back roads (or bring a Maine Atlas: https://www.amazon.com/Maine-Atlas-Gazetteer-Delorme/dp/089933282X).

You might want to follow Aislinn Sarnacki on the Bangor Daily News, Acting Out With Aislinn. She has tons of hiking videos:

That's all I can think of for now, you might find more info at the Ellsworth public library, about local gamer and technology clubs, for instance. Have fun exploring!

In Maine, we have public reserved land where you can camp for a much lower rate. Take a peek at your state's official site as they'll probably list something similar.

We also have the Maine Atlas and Gazeteer that has primitive camp sites on it. (if you check some of the images, you'll see how the sites are shown.) I see Florida has one too by the same name, but I don't know if it's the same as Maine's.

The drawback is that you'll be competing with everyone else who's like you and trying to find a quick place to setup, but who knows, it may work or at least get you going in the right direction.
