Kevyn Aucoin “Making Faces” was groundbreaking though.

u/kennisaurr · 24 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

All of Kevyn Aucoin's books regarding makeup and style are fantastic for beginners and those who just need a kick-start to their makeup journey. I am particularly fond of Making Faces and Face Forward. He also includes very sweet personal anecdotes.

I would start out with mastering the natural look. When doing makeup, it's always better to start off light and then build!

Start with a pressed powder to even out your skin a bit. The best thing about pressed powders are that you can wear them alone and build it to a medium coverage if you so desire. Once you're comfortable enough to try foundation, you can use the pressed powder to set the foundation as well. Your skin looks good as is, so you'll most likely only need a sheer cover of pressed powder. Clinique makes a good one for beginners: http://www.sephora.com/stay-matte-sheer-pressed-powder-P122748.

I'd go for a rosy blush to highlight the apples of your cheeks. Just smile into the mirror and apply! You can also apply your blush to the hollows of your cheeks from your hairline and blend out toward the center of your face. Nars' Orgasm is a pretty universal shade that's a peachy pink color that flatters everyone. http://www.sephora.com/blush-P2855

Then, get an eyelash curler and curl your lashes. I would get a soft black or black mascara and apply. I personally like Maybelline's The Falsies Flared mascara because of the curl it can sustain. http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod3490143

Then, top it off with a light pink or even clear lip gloss of your choice. Or, even a beigey pink lipstick would do.

If you're comfortable with that, you can try an eyeshadow. The shade All that Glitters by Mac is a pretty universal and lovely shade that flatters most skin tones and eyes. Apply some on your lid and blend outward into the crease and a bit past your crease. You can smudge some on your lower eye as well for more definition.

Also, Kevyn Aucoin's book, Making Faces, is a great reference for beginners. http://www.amazon.com/Making-Faces-Kevyn-Aucoin/dp/0316286850

It's great that she is speaking to the school therapist (I just wanted to state that outright). Do you happen to have a Sephora near you? I know they have classes at certain locations so if you go to their site and put in your zip they may be holding a class sometime soon. Link: http://www.sephora.com/store-locations-events?mediaId=16400021&tab=classes

If that doesn't work (just looking at where the classes are held doesn't seem to promising but I might not be centrally located) maybe get her a book by a famous/renown makeup artist so she can practice recreating some of the looks? Here's one that comes to mind: http://www.amazon.com/Making-Faces-Kevyn-Aucoin/dp/0316286850

I'm an old, so I learned from magazine articles (Seventeen, Allure), Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin, and, quite honestly, the back of Revlon eyeshadow packages.

I also learned how to contour in my high school theatre class. So it still kind of shocks me that there's this entire subset of the human population that believes 'stage makeup' is a normal, everyday thing.

I don't recommend buying makeup at Sephora for a beginner because their stuff is all high end and expensive. Instead I recommend good drug store brands and the following websites for tutorials, information, etc - other people have recommended some good brands. I recommend getting color matched at a Sephora or MAC counter (MAC has a huge line of foundations/base colors, by the way, and you can find places online where you can find what your MAC color is in other, drugstore foundations [I'm an NC20 in MAC]). Don't buy a makeup "kit" because they are usually cheap and you'll end up with a ton of stuff you don't need or use.

Look up Pixiwoo on YouTube as well - she does good tutorials.

Making Faces (I love Kevyn Aucoin books - his stuff is crazy advanced and artistic, but the pictures are so inspirational!)

Making Faces by Kevin Aucoin I feel like he covers a lot of the basics really well here and also does a great job of showing some fun/dramatic stuff.

The Beauty of Color by Iman Was the only book I could find that did a good job talking about makeup specifically for women of color.

Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro this is the only Bobbi Brown book I'd recommend, it does a great job of basics and tends to focus on more everyday makeup.

Browsing /all/new and I saw your post.

My wife was in the same boat as you several years ago and she bought the book Making Faces by Kevyn Aucion and it really helped her out. She's become much more confident in her makeup applying skills with it! Check out some of the reviews, it's highly recommended.

u/valhrona · 6 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I agree with the Youtube suggestion; there's a lot on there. Lisa Eldridge is a true high fashion makeup artist who posts videos, and I find her advice very sound and realistic, too. I also adore pixiwoo, petrilude, and gossmakeupartist.

One of my favorite resources is, to this day, Kevyn Aucoin's book Making Faces. There is a lot of discussion of types of products, and ways of achieving naturally pretty or dramatically different looks. http://www.amazon.com/Making-Faces-Kevyn-Aucoin/dp/0316286850

I'd get a nude-colored palette and some toner, and read making faces.

You're doing some things right, I think you just need to channel it and look at what's hip in terms of makeup. Be less concerned about looking feminine and more concerned about looking good!

Making Faces is a pretty fantastic book about all the makeup basics! Best of luck, of course.

My wife, who is a certified makeup geek, suggested John MacLean (https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmeticConsultant) as a good starting place. She says that JM may be a good resource since he's a guy but does not do drag makeup... so he talks about things like how to hide a 5 o'clock shadow or an Adams apple.

When I first came out I bought this book: https://www.amazon.com/Making-Faces-Kevyn-Aucoin/dp/0316286850/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1517458531&sr=8-9&keywords=kevin+aucoin

>"America's preeminent makeup artist shares his secrets, explaining not only the basics of makeup application and technique but also how to use the fundamentals to create a wide range of different looks. 200 color photos & sketches."

As for names, mine is the name of the female lead character from my movie.

There is an excellent layout on contouring in "Making Faces" by Kevyn Aucoin

This book was my makeup bible, and continues to be useful...I highly recommend it :)

I'd recommend Making Faces or Face Forward.

I'm 30, and when I was in my early teens and interested in makeup, I only had my mom who wasn't very into it. I remember one of the first things she ever told me was "Frosts and shimmers are awful" and she bought me Almay makeup in very neutral stuff. But I wanted COLOR!!! Metallic shades of nail polish were beginning to really show up. Hair color mascara, remember that shit? Haha. I remember going into Hot Topic (Hey don't judge. That's when that store kinda used to be super goth and I was into that stuff, we all have phases) and I saw this masterpiece on the shelf. http://www.amazon.com/Making-Faces-Kevyn-Aucoin/dp/0316286850 It was like Kevyn Aucoin's book was lit a little brighter than all the others and it called to me, the holy grail of makeup books. Making Faces changed EVERYTHING for me. Right after I got that book, I went to France and discovered Anna Sui's makeup. That was my introduction to high end. I visited a Nordstom's for the first time (I'm in Charlotte, we didn't have that fancy stuff yet) and was introduced to Urban Decay and Hard Candy. I started trying to copy the makeup looks that I saw in the movie Velvet Goldmine. I fear the time that is approaching when I will get too old for glitter. I've only just recently started using nude shades.

It's crazy how the internet has changed things though. It's great to look at a video and see how it's done, other than in my day where you had to read!!!

As a makeup enthusiast, something I've always thought would be cool to own is makeup books (perhaps I should note that I also like books). I imagine that they would be useful for reading about techniques and drawing inspiration. I've never seen them in person myself, but I have heard good things about the Nars book and the Kevin Aucoin book on youtube before.

Not that I wear makeup really, but when I was a kid I liked to play around with it and I used the fantastic book Making Faces.

u/seanmharcailin · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

lots of good tutorials, but honestly, go to sephora or a makeup counter in a department store and ask for help on how to apply. honestly, though, this book is amazing. I accidentally gave it away and i miss it a LOT! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Making-Faces-Kevyn-Aucoin/dp/0316286850/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1377190852&sr=1-1

u/invertedjenny · 2 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

Just to repeat bc its true - you are a beautiful person :) Your makeup should be totally about you! Experiment! Play around! Go with colors you like and products you love! For example, I've found that I adore wearing long lasting liquid matte lipsticks in crazy bold colors. But I hate wearing foundation. So I wear lipstick and no foundation (maybe I'll wear a little pressed powder though for my oily T-zone).

I am 22 and have taught myself a lot about makeup in the last year. My advice to you is to focus on what you love about your face (what are your favorite features?) and learn what you can do to draw more attention to those parts. Ex.) I like my mouth! So I wear bright reds to draw attention to my mouth.

I am also a big research person. Youtube is filled with so many tutorials. I really liked these books. I rented them both from my local library :)

So be open! Experiment! Shop from new companies when they have sales or when you have coupons for drugstore makeup! I have my favorite foundation from a sale at BH Cosmetics. My favorite red lipstick is from a sale at NYX. My favorite mascara is from a coupon I had for covergirl lash blast mascara. Find what you like and what you don't to build up your personal tastes. My favorite finishing powder is $3 and from Wal-Mart.

But most of all, it is you that makes you beautiful. Makeup is like the cherry on a gorgeous sundae. You are a beautiful sundae. Add as many cherries or sprinkles as you want. A little or a lot, whatever you find you are comfortable with :)

A few things to try-

Maybe try some shapewear to hold in your belly. Men are kinda barrel shaped and have a much higher waist to hip ratio (.85 vs .75).

It looks like you have some shadow on your chin and jaw. Have you started laser or electro? If not start pronto. You may want to use some foundation/concealer to cover it up. Another thing you can try is the red lipstick trick- dab a thin layer of red makeup on the area affected with a makeup sponge- just enough to cancel out the blueish gray color of the beard. Then apply makeup as usual.

And you can make your face more feminine with proper makeup contouring as well. This is a good video, but DEFINITELY go lighter than in the video because the artist is not trans AFAIK. It should at least give you an idea of what areas should be colored.

There is also a good diagram in Kevyn Aucoin's making faces:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/0316286850/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_1?ie=UTF8&index=1

Hair is hair. It will grow out in time. Right now I have the same problem as you. :/

Your jewelry is awesome! You are so talented! Kitten mittens :)

I would pamper myself with this book. I just haven't bought it yet because I normally shop at used book stores (i refused to switch to e-books!) so $16 is a little out of my book spending budget especially since I'm unemployed right now haha.

Thanks for hosting!

I bought Making Faces from a Barnes & Noble as a clueless 14 year old and tried to recreate each look judiciously (in the ancient time before the internets). Kevyn was unbelievably talented at bringing out the best in each client and is the reason I learned to love makeup in the first place. His step by step guides are still the best learning tool for application I've seen. He was [contouring before contouring](https://www.google.com/search?biw=1440&bih=796&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=kevyn+aucoin+men%27s+step+by+step&oq=kevyn+aucoin+men%27s+step+by+step&gs_l=psy-ab.3...154254.158775.0.158995.20.18.0.0.0.0.328.1666.0j9j0j1.10.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..10.0.0....0.gVajOkwgqQ0#imgrc=QU89QNU8qNcA5M:). I lived for his smokey eye in highshool along with the Marilyn - that's Lisa Marie Presley BTW. If you haven't read it, it is bible makeup education- absolutely mandatory!!

You should check out Emilie Autumn for some make-up inspiration. She's wild!

As far as books are concerned, I learned a ton from Kevyn Aucoin's Making Faces. There are quite a few different looks in the book, though it isn't really about scene/goth make up. It does, however, offer step by steps and lots of pictures that would teach you the basics in order to achieve the look you want.

u/vthebarbarian · 1 pointr/RandomActsofMakeup

Oh my Gosh!! I love Kevin Aucoin, I had no idea he had a line of products. I know him from makeup books he's written-they're super fun. I seriously recommend Making Faces. What did you think of his product?

Hollywood Dreams Made Real: Irving Thalberg and the Rise of MGM by Mark Vieria. It has really gorgeous pictures of 1920s and 1930s movie stars.

Also, Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin is kind of a classic, though my copy at least is a large paperback, not a large hardcover. Idk if that's an issue or not.

u/ilikegoldfishes · 1 pointr/AskWomen

Armani foundation makeup is a must if you have uneven skin tone. It's light and doesn't feel like it's there. Expensive but worth it.

hush you. Half of being attractive is confidence! Get some you pretty girl you! :P (I'm going to hold any stronger compliments for the next 4 months... :P)

I understand... when I was 17 I wore far too much make-up too. It's easy to confuse excess/over the top with dramatic. Maybe let her practice more on you so she can get better at making-up pale girls! Less is more and using the eyebrow as the stopping point generally looks streetwalker-ish (of course you still looked lovely!) :P (Full Disclosure: I'm the straight boy who works in fashion and the former goth who taught my mother how to apply make-up. Sigh. Anyways Making Faces is great reference for making dramatic the pro way...)

cliques. yes. that is the word I meant. :P

Ok; boxer/dancer/Doctor Who/firefly girl... All I can say is; Nrrrd Girl I don't diserve you.... (Sorry... been holding that in since last night...)

Ok, final breakdown. You are cute. REALLY cute. Pretty/Quirky/Cute to be specific. You will get lots of boys, just relax. You're probably too much one of the guys for your females friends to compliment you (perhaps they are afraid their boyfriend would rather hang with you than go out with them) and as per the guys; you said it yourself:

>I think my school is too small... I go to a professional school... where everyone knows everyone, in every grade.

I guess what I've been saying all along is; Let me know if you're ever 18+, Single, and in NYC! :)

Look for this book, Making Faces by Kevin Aucoin.

http://www.amazon.com/Making-Faces-Kevyn-Aucoin/dp/0316286850

it is a great reference for stage and life make-up but there is a really nice section on grooming and clarifying for men. He goes into detail about matching eyebrow shaping to the shape of the face and hairline.

I would look for the book in a shop and flip through, don't buy it for these two pages (the rest of the book is really interesting as well, but female oriented)

u/Shelldore · 1 pointr/MakeupAddiction

lol! Anyone can do this, I promise. Mine were way overplucked like five years ago. I let them grow a bit and then followed the advice in Kevin Aucoin's book Making Faces. He discusses different eyebrow shapes and just general makeup technique, along with classic and avant-garde looks alike. It's worth a look.

Believe me, my brows have not always looked this great. And even then, I changed them last night from the advice in this thread! They are now plucked away from my nose a bit more, which has made a huge difference.

I am an artist and have always loved the intense colors and pigments of makeup on the palette of the face. The first time I really got in to makeup was with the book Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin, which I bought from a Hastings about 15 years ago. I had never seen such beautiful, interesting, tasteful makeup. Definitely learned how to do eyeshadow from that book. I wore makeup in high school, and then only got in to it again a year or so ago when I joined /r/MakeupAddiction.
