To start up, you'll need a few basic things. The Bob Ross Master Piece Set has the majority of what you need (paint, knife, brushes), then you'll want a big plexiglass palette for mixing the paints. Finally, you'll need an easel to hold a canvas. I can personally recommend this one from Blick if you have one near you. Also, you can buy the stuff individually, or they sell Bob Ross branded starter kits, which actually have decent quality stuff for a beginner kit, that can get you rolling pretty well. You'll need some additional things, like a canvas to paint on, a palette, a cleaning can and turpenoid, and an easel. It gets pretty messy, so a tarp is handy to have.

If it's this master paint kit, the DVD is half an hour intro to the equipment--the different paints and brushes--and then the half-hour painting Mountain Summit. I remember that it comes with a print of Mountain Summit, but I don't remember whether it also comes with a written set of instructions for the painting.

My girlfriend got me the painting set a while back and man, it's so much harder than he makes it look. I know he was actually a painter, but he's really just stabbing the canvas with a knife. Like, actually! How hard can it be! Well, apparently I don't have that kind of power, so I just steal pictures and put them on card faces.

To do a Bob Ross using the techniques he does in his videos you will need oils, they won't work with Acrylics. However, oils are expensive and more of a PIA to clean up. If you seriously want to paint like him the easiest way to get almost everything you need is to buy his kit plus the following:

• Container of odorless paint thinner
  
• Pre-stretched canvas (you can get a 2 pack at Michael's for under $10 w/their usual coupons).
  
• either an easel or something that supports and holds your painting (I speak from experience...you want that canvas secured).
  
  You will also need:
  
  
• Newspaper to cover the floor
  
• a trash can big enough to flop your brush around in without getting paint thinner everywhere.
  
• a smallish bucket/tupperware for your odorless paint thinner.

  Edit 2: I feel like I should mention that the kit is plenty for multiple paintings, not just the 1. Also, it doesn't come with Indian Yellow which isn't required to do his paintings but is used in may of them. Also, I meant smallish bucket or bucket sized tupperware, you won't get anywhere with a small tupperware except dirty.
  
  Edit 3: for a pallette use some paper plates, no need for you to buy that big plastic thing he uses if your just trying it out.

The mountains are all about the knife, and I know he does some of them with brushes, but for me it makes sense to do a sharp edge with the knife.

For the trees, I highly prefer the fan brush. Pushing in to bend the bristles is really the only way I can make trees that I like. He does his shades of grey trees with a knife, but that's just cause bob is a badass.

Bushes are, as always, a 1 inch brush. He loads his better than I do, so thats how he gets really distinct colors for his bushes. Me not loading enough makes them all not quite as bright white as his. But I feel like when I load them as heavy as he does I don't get quite the pretty hundreds of leaves in one press effect that he gets. I'm still really trying to figure that out.

If I had to choose, I'd do fan brush, 2 inch, and knife. I guess my favorite is the fan brush. I feel like I achieve the effects I want easiest and most consistent with it.

Honestly, It's a great kit to get and play with. I've done maybe 3 or 4 of these paintings and just now had to buy some more paints. It's a great way to try it out and see if you'll love it as much as I do.

The Master Paint Kit is fairly inclusive. It doesn't come with canvases or mineral spirits, but it's otherwise a decent launching point.

8 paint colors at 37mL are roughly $40, each brush is roughly $8. Piecemeal might be cheaper. If you can get it under $70, it's a decent bargain.

Avoid the "basic" paint kit with 5 colors and the "deluxe" kit that comes with a $35 relatively useless wooden box

I've been on a Bob Ross kick lately. I haven't taken the plunge to start painting.. but sometime soon.. maybe. =), but his voice is soothing and i just love him and his happy little trees. He'll tell you plenty of stories. =P
