I'll admit that modern atrocities are not my forte so I have none off the top of my head. I deal primarily with early modern history, and most of that comes in third-person and secondhand accounts. The closest I can think of is the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, of which numerous books are written.

I do have one similar to this, although it's dry because the diaries themselves were dry: Mastery, Tyranny, and Desire: Thomas Thistlewood and His Slaves in the Anglo-Jamaican World by Trevor Burnard. It examines a single slave owner in 18th century Jamaica and the atrocities he committed against his slaves through his diaries (they included mass rape and torture). Hard to explain, but the writer goes into more depth on the accounts themselves, whereas his journals are like reading an accounting book. We did an episode on him here.

But yeah, anything past the 1800s is going to read pretty dry, and you have to piece together the horrifying details yourself quite often.
