You can get this stuff that comes in a nail varnish bottle that you brush onto your nails. It makes them taste like Satan's anus for about a week. Use it for a few weeks and you'll soon stop!

Another tip is to always have a nail file handy. I found that I bit my nails to try to smoothen them out, but always ended up making them worse. A nail file fixes that.

I used to bite my nails like mad, so I went to a pharmacy and bought some of the anus nail varnish. Now I only bite my nails when I have a cold for some reason, and I usually remember to put on a quick dab of the varnish when I notice I'm doing it. I'm not sure I'll ever have the habit entirely kicked, but I'm close enough at this point that it doesn't matter.

EDIT - here is some of the evil shit. It seems expensive, but lasts basically forever. http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-Biting-Sucking-0-3-Fluid/dp/B0000YUXI0

Mavala Stop. It's basically a foul-tasting clear polish that you put on your nails once every couple of days. It basically stops you from subconsciously biting your nails. Took me 2 or 3 weeks to break the habit but it came back a few months later after I stopped using it.

u/[deleted] · 22 pointsr/AskMen

There is a product like nail polish (without any color) that has this very bitter and disgusting taste, my mother used to put it on my nails when I was a kid because I used to bite my nails a lot, the moment you put your nail in your mouth you taste the most disgusting taste ever, after a couple of days you stop biting your nails.
Here's is the product :

Nail biter of twenty years here, abruptly stopped after using this horrid stuff -- use it long enough and it will seriously curve your addiction. I have tried many others but this the real deal. Mostly odorless and invisible -- at first I was dowsing my finger with a heavy coat and it was a little glossy. I didn't make that mistake more than a couple times, this stuff is strong so it only requires a quick brush or you'll get a mouthful of bitter when eating any kind of finger food. Nail biters of reddit, if you have the slightest inkling of motivation to stop, buy this shit.

u/Chipchipcherryo · 17 pointsr/calmhands

I just started using this bitter nail polish. I didn't paint my entire nail since it's a bit shiny and I'm a guy.

So I dipped a toothpick into the polish and applied it just to the very edge of the nail and under the nail. The polish stays on for a long time and a small amount is all you need. This stuff is gross but is long lasting.

I also found that I bite my nails when I drive. So I bought driving gloves. I'm sure I look silly to others but I can't bite my nails with them on.

My dog used to eat electrical cords all the time. Surprisingly even chewing through them never shocked him (not that I'd recommend it...just saying)

2 things that totally worked for us.

  1. Stop Nail Biting Polish painted on the cords. It tastes awful. It's not tempting after the first lick.

  2. I cut a super hot pepper (serrano) and rubbed the pepper oil up and down the length of the cord. It didn't last as long as the polish, but it was cheaper and WAY more effective. He would still check them out with the polish, but after the serrano he was done with cords forever.
u/marylou5 · 13 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

Well, it's hard to break an ingrained habit but you just have to stop. You can buy spicy/bitter nail polish that will help you avoid biting your nails.

I don't bite my nails, but I do pick at them; I primarily bite my cuticles... and as someone who has had this compulsion her whole life, I implore you - please don't berate, get mad, or punish. These things are usually boredom-driven and anxiety/stress-driven. Getting angry will likely make this worse. It's not a conscious thing for most of us - for me and many others, you don't realize what you're doing until it's too late.
Anyway, here are the things my parents tried to do to stop me from biting that didn't work, but may work for you:

  • No-bite nail polish such as this.

  • Making her wear gloves.

  • Putting hot sauce on fingers.

I obviously don't really recommend any of this, because when they were done to me, it just made me more anxious... which, in the end, made the compulsion worse.

You may want to try getting a kiddie manicure with her, or painting her nails yourself. Tell her how pretty her nails are when they’re painted, and make it fun for her. This could make her want to maintain them instead of bite them.

I recommend coming over to /r/calmhands and /r/CompulsiveSkinPicking and read around, or ask all the questions you want; you will likely learn a lot about how to approach it, and how not to approach it.

You basically put it on your fingernails like nail Polish. You can't see it but it makes the taste of biting your nails horrible and over time you should condition yourself to be able to stop.

u/veruha · 10 pointsr/tifu

Use this next time and see if he still laughs

u/Lderx · 9 pointsr/toddlers

We just tackled this like 2 weeks ago, and it only took 2 applications of this: mavala stop .

2.5 year old and was very attached to his thumb, so I was surprised at how quick it worked. He still hasn’t figured out how to settle down before naps/bed, so it takes a little more time to get him to sleep.

u/anticausal · 8 pointsr/pics

I've had some success with this stuff. A few months after I stop using it, I do relapse to some extent. I'm definitely better than I used to be though, and never bite to the extent that I once did (i.e. like the thumb in the image).

It's clear and cheap and you just paint it on your nails. This will stop you from biting. The tough part is to then stop yourself from creating a new habit that is picking at your finger nails with your other finger nails lol.

u/TheSpearCarrier · 7 pointsr/interestingasfuck

If you are actually looking to quit the habit you can try this - worked for me!

u/MrSlyde · 7 pointsr/feminineboys

Friend of mine had a similar issue. She had a BIG nail biting problem. She fixed it with filing and some nail polish-like stuff that tasted downright NASTY, evidently.

I think this is it but I’ll send her a text

u/j0339 · 5 pointsr/LifeProTips

This stuff truly helped my fiancé because it really tastes awful.

As for me, I have acrylic/gel nails, which helped me stop not necessarily because they’re pretty and I don’t want to ruin them, I just literally can’t now.

u/theJabberwockwitch · 5 pointsr/littlespace

There is specialty nail Polish you can get specifically for stopping nail biting. It tastes horrible like I'm talking horrible. Something like this

Here are some really good tips from dermatologists.

Here

The one I found that helped me when I was stopping was the last one try stopping gradually so one nail at a time so both thumbs then your thumb and second fingers till you have developed healthy habits. It's going to take a lot of patience so don't give up if you fail the first couple of times. It is a habit and habits are hard to break or replace but it is possible I was a chronic nail biter for 10years I replaced it with playing with my hair and when I'm stressed I tap out a tune on my fingers it still involves my hands but I'm not wrecking my nails or fingers.

This ladies blog is genius it is honest and she herself was a sufferer and knows how it feels to fail and what you go through having bad nails and the disappointment. She is also realistic and tries to find the route of the issue and give you realistic ways to stop the biting.

Here

But most of all don't give up we are all here to support you and I'm sure your partner would love to support and help you.

Good luck ♡

u/el0rg · 4 pointsr/AskReddit

Get some of this stuff. It's like a clear nail polish that tastes awful. It will turn a sub-conscious habit into a "holy shit that's gross" moment every time you put your fingers in your mouth.

u/yeldarBL · 4 pointsr/peeling
u/justgoodenough · 4 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Ugh, nail biting is SO HARD TO STOP. I "stopped" Christmas Eve, 2014. I know this because I had to go to Urgent Care because an abscess developed in the cuticle of one of my nails because of biting and I had to get it drained. The pain was horrific and I decided never again.

I used this stuff to help stop me from biting. It tastes horrible. Like, you can't even put your hands NEAR your mouth (good by eating food with your hands!). And it lasts days. Some of the cheaper polishes need to be reapplied after every hand washing and AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT. It worked for me because that taste would remind me of my goals and I could stop myself. I only needed to use it for a few weeks (maybe a month) to get the nail biting compulsion under control enough for me to be able to stop myself using just... my brain and will power.

That being said, I still occasionally bite them when I am stressed, but I try to keep a nail file on me at all times so when I catch myself I can just file the nail down and try not to pick at it. It's such a fucking hard habit to overcome.

u/tobycrisis · 4 pointsr/LifeProTips

Try covering the end of the pen with something edible but that tastes nasty. Used this one for my sister who wouldn't stop biting her nails - there was a special varnish you could put onto the nails - don't see why you can't put it on a pen?

Try this. Mavala Switzerland Mavala Stop Nail Biting, 0.3 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000YUXI0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MzY6AbDDBGMY2

u/tonytwotoes · 3 pointsr/confidence

There is this clear coat you can use on your nails, here.

Personally, I have the same habit, only not as bad. I can stop myself as long as my nails aren't over a certain length. Once they get longer I can't seem to hold myself back, though, so I make sure my car, room, bathroom and kitchen have nail clippers so i can abate the urge.

u/omnidirectional · 3 pointsr/calmhands

I have a similar unconscious habit, and I need a strong and consistent reminder not to do it. Paint this stuff on the parts that you don't want to bite, and you will quickly learn not to bite there =;-)

Hi there :) There's this nail polish that tastes icky but looks like a clear coat in order to deter biting. It helps when you don't even know you're doing it. Kinda tastes like ear wax. Hope it helps!

u/misinformasian · 3 pointsr/Nails

I have bit my nails all my life and was finally able to stop 2 years ago (I'm 28 now) because of this stuff. It's just nasty. Keep putting it on and be consistent with it. Once they've grown out more there are lots of products you can use to help strengthen your nails.

If you're super desperate, I've heard good things about hypnosis.

u/PigmeyPuff · 3 pointsr/malegrooming

Hey im a nail technician and used to be a horrid nail biter. I've coached many through the habit! Everything these ppl said is true but im going to provide you with some links:

1- Nail file - you dont need a glass one obv but they last forever and are more sustainable.

2- Cuticle Nippers- I would, like u/deskais said, keep them with you all the time for a while and use that when you have a hang nail or rough cuticle you want to pick at. This one is a pretty inexpensive pair that comes with a cuticle pusher to push your cuticles back with.

3- Disgustig nail polish - I've heard tales of people chewing through it but that is mind boggling to me. It tastes awful and will at the very least remind you if you are biting at them subconsciously. There is another brand called "stop the bite" but it wears off and isn't so bad. This one stays on until you remove it.

4- Cuticle Cream. This one is important and would be my #1 choice if you only picked one. Moisturize that shit every day. Keep it on your nightstand or in your car so you dont forget. If they aren't dry, there will be nothing to pick at and they will look so much better.

Id also get a professional manicure just to see how they do it and then that will help you learn how to do it yourself, and it will clean them up and then all you have to do is keep it up with at home care.

Good luck! Id love to see a followup post in a month if you remember.

u/SiriaCanis · 3 pointsr/Nails

There is a type of nail polish that you can buy that is specifically to aid in stopping nail biting! You put a coat on your nails and when you find yourself biting your nail you will be met with a horridly bitter taste! It is kind of interesting conditioning approach to stopping the habit :). Here is one that has good reviews on amazon: [Mavala Stop Nail Biting] (https://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Switzerland-Stop-Nail-Biting/dp/B0000YUXI0)

u/pikaluva13 · 3 pointsr/mildlyinfuriating

Not that you necessarily looking for solutions to stop, but I'd recommend something like this. It tastes bitter and encourages you to keep your nails out of your mouth.

u/psychosox · 3 pointsr/calmhands

This is what I've used to recently stop biting: http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-Biting-Sucking-0-3-Fluid/dp/B0000YUXI0

It worked wonders for me. I would bite at the skin around my finger continuously. My wife would always tell me to stop, but I just couldn't. I would do it subconsciously and consciously, because if I didn't do it, my mind would break and I couldn't focus on anything else.

The Mavala stuff is so bitter, that you rapidly develop an aversion to putting your hand near your mouth. It even makes it so you don't want to eat food with your hands, as the stuff will rub off on the food and taint it.

I used it for about 3 weeks and haven't used it at all this week. I have no more desire to bite at my fingers. I still will occasionally pick at them, but the picking was never much of a problem for me, and I'm using Aquaphor to help make my fingers smooth so I don't have the dry / cracked fingers.

I'm sorry that you are going through this, though, as it really sucks. I hope my suggestion can help solve your problem in the way it seems to have solved mine.

Good luck.

u/token_bastard · 3 pointsr/Warhammer40k

For me, honestly, I just realized that two of my incisors were so worn down from biting my nails that they couldn't touch anymore when I bite, so I just quit cold turkey. As /u/rjjm88 said, if you have something good to replace it with for the auto-oral response (something to chew on when you're nervous/stressed), it helps out a ton. I actually work at a cigar shop and smoke quite a few cigars, which I inevitably end up chewing on as I smoke them. Not that I recommend that, but as said, have something you can nibble on handy and it'll help a bit. There's also stuff like this,, though that gets a little extreme.

u/WadeK · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

There's this clear nail polish that tastes like death. It's barely noticeable with no smell, so guys use it too, and whenever you go in for a bite you get this nasty, rancid, bitter flavor. After about two or three weeks, the habit is dropped.

http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-0-3-Fluid-Ounce/dp/B0000YUXI0
That might be the stuff, but I know there are other products out there you can try.

u/strig · 3 pointsr/IWantToLearn

Similar to the spicy stuff on your fingers idea, there exists a product that you apply to your fingers sort of like nail polish. It's used to prevent nail biting. It's clear, odorless, and you can't tell it's there, but it tastes AWFUL. Probably the most terribly bitter taste you've ever experienced.

I found it in a joke shop in Sweden for putting on people's food to fuck with them, but I think that this or this is the same thing.

Slop some of that on your fingers and you'll regret nibbling. Similar to what SFL said, it usually happens to me when I'm really stressed out and concentrating hard on something. After finals are done, my fingers usually heal up nicely.

u/bad_tipper · 3 pointsr/IAmA

I was exactly the same for like 15 years. until i found this stuff:

http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-Biting-Sucking-0-3-Fluid/dp/B0000YUXI0

this nasty shit is like magic. i had this on for a week, (only 1 application) and I slipped once or twice, but that awful taste does something to your subconscious and I haven't had the urge to bite at all since. any small urges are easy to resist now. I would offer to give you the bottle, but I want to save it for a while just in case.

Give Mavala Stop a shot. I've tried some of the other similar concepts and quickly grew used to the taste. This one is pretty awful and serves as a very fast reminder when I'm doing it unconsciously.

http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-Biting-Sucking-0-3-Fluid/dp/B0000YUXI0

Unfortunately, this also makes anything you touch with your fingers taste like shit. It's an unfortunate side effect, but I'll take it (my biggest problem is remembering to put the stuff on in the first place, once on it does a pretty good job).

u/wmichaelis · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I've been pointed to Mavala Stop:

I don't know how I feel about it, though - I hate the idea of getting a negative reinforcement when eating finger foods, too.

I'm going to take a week and try the rubber band method:

http://lifehacker.com/110335/how-to-use-a-rubberband-to-stop-biting-your-nails

I tried it half heartedly quite a few years ago, and maybe this time I can stick with it.

I just stopped biting a two or three weeks ago. I'm using Mavala Stop (literally the grossest thing I have ever tasted) and using Duri Rejuvacote to get them to grow faster... (not sure about the results yet :) Congrats to you! We're all gonna make it :)

u/dontforgetpants · 2 pointsr/funny

Use this on your fingernails, and carry these with you religiously... if you get a hangnail, or you've made a rough edge, clean it up with those instead of chewing. You can probably get both at your local grocery store or pharmacy.

u/TooPeace · 2 pointsr/Skinpicking

That polish is legit the nastiest thing ever and you will 1000% think twice before putting your hand in your mouth. I mean even if they just freeze your lips momentarily that taste is stuck with you.

My bf didn't have the patience to keep telling me either so he sneaks and does this every couple of weeks or whenever he notices that I'm putting my hands in my mouth too much. It's the worst surprise the next day when you just wanna do something casual like... Lick your fingers after a delicious and messy taco but I 🤷🏽‍♀️ the man gets results.

Malvala Stop and it is ... nasty.

I did (with the kids permission) use it on my oldest kids. One stopped sucking her thumb overnight. The other would get upset, but power through it. We tried it a few times over the next few years. She finally decided - on her own - to try the 'yucky stuff' again, and finally stopped sucking her fingers when she was 6.

You can buy anti fingernail biting polish that essentially puts a bitterant on your nails so you at least notice when you start biting them subconsciously. It pretty much makes your nails taste awful.

IIRC it takes about 2 weeks to break a habit, so just keep at it for a while and you should be golden.

Here's an example of the polish.

u/krimsen · 2 pointsr/getdisciplined

When I was a kid, I used to bite my nails. My mom thought it was the worst thing in the world, so she tried everything she could think of.

One of them was an anti-nail-biting nail polish, which did help for a bit. It tastes bitter, so when you unconsciously put your hands in your mouth, you realize it and stop.

Here are a few I found from a quick Google search:

CVS $5

Amazon $10

Walmart $3

I usually buy everything at Amazon, but it's the most expensive in this instance. I think a trip to the local pharmacy might be quicker and cheaper, in any case.

Oh, and the nail biting? Silly mom... it went away when I gained confidence in myself and my abilities (I was a nerdy little kid and my mom helped wimp me up by mothering me to death.)

I only mention that last bit because perhaps there's a psychological root to your dilemma.

The nail polish may help in the immediate sense, but if you ask yourself where the behavior is coming from, you might end up solving a bigger issue for yourself.

u/pking8786 · 2 pointsr/IWantToLearn

There are solutions you can buy, like clear nail varnish that tastes disgusting when it mixes with saliva but is generally inert. I used to not only bite my nails, but the skin on the tips of my fingers.. Usually when watching TV or generally bored. Other tips include developing another habit in it's place such as pen twirling, coin manipulation and other things to keep your brain and hands busy when normally idle

u/barnwecp · 2 pointsr/self

try this. It worked for a lot of people I know

u/vanillarain · 2 pointsr/IWantToLearn

I am surprised no one has mentioned this. Mavela Stop is what worked for me. It tastes awful. Whenever you find yourself chewing on your fingers without thinking the awful taste of Mavela will stop you. After about a week you will notice a drastic improvement. Plus, it helped me form a habit of being cognizant of any time I put my fingers in my mouth.

u/powerful_clam · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

I used Mavala Stop to end my 20 year nail biting frenzy. I had nails in 2 weeks. I could not eat gummy bears for about a month after because I was afraid of the flavor.

u/Futureproofed · 2 pointsr/ADHD

First, maybe try painting your nails with this. It doesn't work for everyone, but it may help to provide a negative association with the biting. I find chewing on something else really helpful as well. Then head here: /r/CompulsiveSkinPicking, you may find something helpful.

I unfortunately already picked at my face (I have acne) and bit/chewed my hands long before the idea that I might have ADHD was even on my radar, and Adderall has not (yet) seemed to help. It is difficult to break, especially when you've been doing it since childhood (in my case). For me, a combination of harm reduction (always carrying bandages, alcohol pads, Neosporin in case I scratch myself - Hands are dirty even just washed) and redirection (instead, trim my nails, shave my face, do a face mask, put on expensive lotion) has been helpful.

And perhaps mention it to a psych. Could be other stuff going on.

u/j4z7y · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

there's this nail polish that tastes really nasty thats supposed to help stop nail biting: http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-Biting-Sucking-0-3-Fluid/dp/B0000YUXI0

i hope this helps!

u/jmurphy42 · 2 pointsr/Parenting

I agree with the other commenters, and think that seeing a psychologist would be an excellent idea. No five year old should have to live with that much stress, and finding a better way to help him let go of it is imperative.

In the meantime, there's a special type of bitter-tasting nail polish that can help him keep those fingers out of his mouth. I used to bite so much that my fingers would bleed and I'd end up with nasty infections. My parents used a product like the linked one (this was almost 30 years ago so I have no idea which brand), and I hated it with a fiery passion, but it sure as heck got me to stop biting.

u/gvxo · 2 pointsr/beauty

There are products designed to prevent nail biting that will help short term. Getting manicures is supposed to help too. It will really help if you can figure out why you bite your nails, though. That way you can deal with the root cause if it's something like anxiety, replace with something healthy if it's a habit when you're bored, etc.

u/jimbolaya · 2 pointsr/Parenting

I'm a new dad with 5 month old twins so I haven't faced this issue yet. However I do know that a method to keep kids from sucking their thumb or nail bitting is to use a bittering agent on the thumb/nails. Mavala Stop is highly recommended on Amazon. You could use it to make the pacifier too bitter for her to want it in her mouth.

u/26space · 2 pointsr/Advice

there are a couple different ways to stop sucking your thumb. What I recommend is this clear "nail polish". It doesn't look like anything is on your nail and when you put it in your mouth it has a foul taste, discouraging the habit. Link: https://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Switzerland-Stop-Nail-Biting/dp/B0000YUXI0

In addition, it sounds like you have a fair amount of anxiety. Perhaps talking to your doctor about it may help.

:-)

u/toast_for_dinner · 1 pointr/OCD

No, you wouldn't slather it all over your hands - it goes on like clear nail polish. But that stuff tastes awful, and the taste will probably get all over your hands anyway, especially the cuticles. I don't remember it smelling like anything.

I would recommend that you ask your pharmacist, but this is an example of what I found online: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000YUXI0

Good luck!

Lifelong nail biter here. I tried Mavala Stop and it worked for a while. It's nice to see your nails grow and I even had to use a nail clipper once! I did eventually relapse, but I wish you the best.

u/poorsoi · 1 pointr/calmhands

That happened to me with Mavala Stop. It transfers with even the lightest touch, so you can't cook or touch your face at all without somehow getting it in your mouth.

u/B1GgP3tE · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

i've been using this stuff and it worked well for the first few weeks. it just sucks that you really can't do anything that involves putting your hands anywhere near your mouth or risk having that bitter taste in your mouth for a while.

such incidental activities included: resting your chin on your palm, flossing, licking your fingers after eating foods such as chicken wings, and picking food out of your teeth.

otherwise, if you have the discipline to keep using the stuff, it might work for ya

u/razzertto · 1 pointr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide
  1. Wear something close to your skin tone so it appears nude or choose a light pink.

  2. If you need extra help breaking the habit I suggest this stuff: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000YUXI0

u/timfou · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

I've been a nail-biter all my life. The awful tasting Mavala Stop (Amazon) has been the best solution for me. It tastes sooooo bad it forces me to not absentmindedly bite my nails.

I used to do that a lot when I was younger so my mum suggested that I use a special nail polish, that prevents you from biting your nails. It really worked as it was bitter like hell..if you forgot about it and were tempted to bite, you regretted the next moment.after 2 months or so the detering reflex grew so strong on me that I've never bitten my nails since. The brand is called Mavala,it's clear btw,no colour..

After 30yrs of nail biting and trying to stop, this is what finally helped. Stuff is really bitter. I stopped nail biting after 3 applications. Now I use it only in case of relapse, which is rare.

Nail varnish may work, but as a guy I'm sure I'd get a few stares if I wore some. Although I've been thinking about this.

u/sunny_bell · 1 pointr/RedditLaqueristas

You need to come up with some kind of "competing behavior" for nail biting, generally something that you can't do it and bite your nails at the same time. There are products like this or you could put band-aids (preferably the fabric ones since the texture isn't pleasant to have in your mouth and gets your attention) around the tips of your fingers. Just something like that that you can do that is incompatible with nail biting until eventually the habit is broken.

u/JCacho · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Buy This and apply for 3 weeks. I'm on it right now and believe me Im VERY conscious of when I go for a bite.

Mavala Stop Nail Biting and Thumb Sucking 0.3 Fluid Ounces https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0000YUXI0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Kr.KDb8E2BKHD

One application lasts a few days and let me tell you, it tastes nasty as hell. Not only that, it lingers so you're forced to think about your mistake. Even eating finger food becomes risky while it's on.

I have adhd so impulse control and fidgety behaviour is a problem for me, and even so this stuff broke my chewing habit.

I used this stuff. It's usually available at a pharmacy too. It tastes terrible, and is clear, so no one knows it's on, so when you subconsciously start biting your nails, your learn the hard way by getting a terrible taste in your mouth.

http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-Biting-Sucking-0-3-Fluid/dp/B0000YUXI0

u/avalove19 · 1 pointr/calmhands

So sorry for the late response but what really helped me stop nail biting once and for all is to use the Mavala nail polish that is specifically designed to stop nail biting (you can get it on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Switzerland-Stop-Nail-Biting/dp/B0000YUXI0 or https://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Helps-Biting-Thumb-Sucking/dp/B00336WT3O). The taste is sooo bitter and disgusting that you don't want to put your finger back in your mouth. The only downside is that it can rub off onto finger foods or cooking, so if you eat chips or grab food with your nails you will taste the polish. But it's a small price to pay for long term reward. I cannot tell you how badly my nail biting was until I used this nail polish and now I have the longest nails out of all my friends. I hope you try it out some time! Good luck!

u/f1del1us · 1 pointr/explainlikeimfive

Along with the other reasons listed, it's really easy to give yourself a paronychia (infection along the nail). If you bite too far and create an open wound, it can get infected. This will cause the pain to be delayed, and will generally cause redness, throbbing pain, a bit of swelling. If it gets bad enough, it's good to get it lanced, and if not, epsom salt and hot water soaks work wonders. I also suggest Mavala Stop, to help stop biting them. Unless you like it.

u/-AJ · 1 pointr/Advice

Put Mavala Stop on your nails to make them taste horrendous.

u/_TIXCY_ · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

You could try putting lotion or something on your hands often (plus it's winter, so they won't dry out!) and depending on the lotion, it might make them taste nasty?

Hell, a lady I used to work with would scrape her nails on her deodorant because it tasted so bitter and would stay underneath her nails.

They sell a lot of shit for nail biting. Like this? Just depends if you want to give it a try or paint something like that on them.

I know a few kids who were thumb-suckers in elementary school that just ended up adapting to the taste of whatever their parents put on their thumbs and kept doing it. =/

For the finger sucking: My four year old doesn't suck his fingers while he's wearing [Thum] (http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/thum-b-sucking/nail-biting-liquid/ID=prod922-product) . The only trick is consistency. If that turns out to be too weak, Mavala Stop has better [reviews on Amazon] (http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-Biting-Sucking-0-3-Fluid/dp/B0000YUXI0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413493717&sr=8-1&keywords=thum) but it sounds like it might be too strong in some cases.

I use clear nail polish on my nails to put a physical barrier there. I don't like the plastic texture of it. I use this this when I know I'm going to be stressing out: https://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Switzerland-Stop-Nail-Biting/dp/B0000YUXI0/ref=sr_1_4_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1522717374&sr=1-4&keywords=mavala

It works really well during finals. It usually takes only one application to remind me not to bite. In addition, I file regularly (once or twice a week) to keep the edges from splintering. I also use a lot of cuticle oil to keep my cuticles from getting dry. At night, I use a really thick hydrating cream to make my hands smoother. It all keeps me from picking at everything.

u/duckduckfish · 1 pointr/IAmA

If you want to quit.

I bought the above for my boyfriend.. he's a nail-biter. Nearing the end of the first week and it seems to be working.

If you don't want to quit.. why not?

u/IsYouUgly · 1 pointr/amiugly

Yeah I understand. You can use something like this where you can buy a nail polish that helps you stop biting your nails. Though it is a bit expensive for some "nail polish" so look into something comparable.

I may not be the best at nail care but I have Trichotillomania and I bite my skin/pull hair and all that jazz. I used to bite my nails but used this:http://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Stop-Biting-Sucking-0-3-Fluid/dp/B0000YUXI0 when I was a teenager and even though I still pull hair/have other compulsions I don't ever bite my nails any more!

This nail polish is designed to stop people from biting their nails as it tastes really bitter. You can put a clear coat of this over the ends of cords, plugs for appliances.. basically anything you don't want your animals to chew. You may have to reapply a few times but eventually your cat will learn.

Tried some Mavala which is similar to this with a bitter flavor and less risk of poisoning yourself (maybe?). Might be advisable to start with that and work your way to clear nail polish. The shiny reminder was more than enough most of the time and the bitter punishment was a pretty solid deterrent. Warning though, 10 out of 10 SO's hate Mavala kisses.
